YouTube pledges $1 million toward police reform

YouTube pledges $1 million toward police reform

YouTube has its faults, but it's also one of the few brands that stepped up swiftly with a tangible response to widespread protests against police brutality.

On Friday, the company tweeted a pledge to donate $1 million "in support of efforts to address social injustice." It was a vague promise at the time, motivated by what the company described as a desire to "stand in solidarity against racism and violence."

We stand in solidarity against racism and violence. When members of our community hurt, we all hurt. We’re pledging $1M in support of efforts to address social injustice.

Apple, Amazon among companies adjusting operations amid demonstrations

POLITICS-RACISM-JUSTICE-US-demonstration-police-minorities Photo by Valerie Macon/AFP via Getty Images

Amazon, Target, and Apple all made modifications to their business operations over the weekend in light of demonstrations in cities across the US, Bloomberg reported.

Apple kept many of its retail stores closed on Sunday, including some that had just reopened after weeks of being shuttered due to the pandemic. Target closed 32 of its stores in the Minneapolis area and said Sunday it would temporarily close several more across the country.

Amazon told Bloomberg that it had scaled back and adjusted routes “in a handful of cities” to ensure workers’ safety. Drivers in Chicago and Los Angeles received messages Saturday instructing them to stop delivering packages and return home, according to Bloomberg.

Minneapolis has been the site of...

A restaurant in the Netherlands is using creepy robot waiters for social distancing

Royal Palace Renesse/Instagram

A restaurant in the Netherlands has introduced new robot waiters as a way to reduce human-to-human contact in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. The red-and-white robots (which are giving me serious Rosey the robot vibes) will greet customers, serve food and pick up used dishes from diners’ tables at the Royal Palace restaurant in the town of Renesse, according to the Associated Press.

The as-yet-unnamed robots say “hello and welcome,” in and they wear little scarves (to seem less creepy? idk).

“They help us with the work we do,” says Leah Hu, whose family owns the Royal Palace. “We are often busy and cleaning tables and the robots give us an extra hand. We are not disappearing. We are still here. They will always need people in...

Mark Zuckerberg 'expressed concerns' in Trump phone call, so that should fix everything

Mark Zuckerberg 'expressed concerns' in Trump phone call, so that should fix everything

Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly suggested to President Donald Trump, in a roundabout fashion, that perhaps the poster-in-chief could tone it down a little. For him? Pretty please?

Axios reports that two sources familiar with a phone call Trump made to the Facebook CEO on Friday said that Zuckerberg did not make any specific requests of the president, but conveyed "concerns" about his "tone and rhetoric," expressed disagreement with recent sentiments, and told the president that his choice of words "put Facebook in a difficult position."

The latter is likely a reference to the fact that Facebook has faced increased pressure to moderate the president's statements on the platform, which regularly contain outright lies, misinformation, and inflammatory rhetoric. Read more...

The 'Lord of the Rings' Mordor meme happened because Sean Bean kept the script in his lap

Josh Gad's YouTube series Reunited Apart has hosted socially distant cast reunions for beloved films like Back to the Future, Splash, and The Goonies, but the most recent episode brought back the Fellowship of the Ring (and other assorted parties) for "One Zoom to Rule Them All."

The reunion, which also included director Peter Jackson and co-writer/producer Philippa Boyens, was a delightful opportunity for the cast members to reminisce about the quirkier aspects of shooting all three Lord of the Rings movies at once.

Sir Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf, revealed that his first day on set was for his first scene in The Fellowship of the Ring, when he meets up with Frodo in the Shire. The second scene he shot was Galdalf's farewell in The Return of the KingRead more...

YouTube will donate $1 million to the Center for Policing Equity

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

YouTube says it will donate $1 million to the Center for Policing Equity, to demonstrate “solidarity against racism and violence.” The Alphabet-owned video platform tweeted that it was pledging the funds “in support of efforts to address social injustice.”

The company did not specifically reference the demonstrations in cities across the US over the weekend protesting the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Authorities charged fired Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd’s death, after a video showed Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck as other officers looked on.

The Center for Policing Equity is a nonprofit research think tank made up of research scientists and race...

Plane takes flight over Washington, with no fuel. (It's electric.)

Plane takes flight over Washington, with no fuel. (It's electric.)

A plane retrofit with an all-electric motor successfully took flight over Washington for 30 minutes on Thursday.

The small plane, a Cessna Caravan, used a MagniX 750-horsepower motor in the test flight, the same type of MagniX engine installed on an all-electric seaplane that flew over British Columbia in December. The aviation company AeroTEC modified the Cessna.

Electric planes, after further testing, may one day prove successful in transporting people on shorter regional hops (perhaps some 300 miles or less). That's good, because taking off burns a lot of fuel, meaning short flights today have double the "carbon intensity," or amount of carbon burned per mile, than longer flights. Read more...

Chrissy Teigen promised $200,000 for bail funds after Trump's 'MAGA night' tweet

Chrissy Teigen promised $200,000 for bail funds after Trump's 'MAGA night' tweet

Chrissy Teigen once again proved why she’s the unofficial queen of Twitter.

When Donald Trump responded to nationwide protests against police brutality and the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor by tweeting that it was "MAGA NIGHT AT THE WHITE HOUSE," no one quite understood what he meant. The tweet falsely stated that protests around the White House had "little to do with the memory of George Floyd" and made less sense from there.

The professionally managed so-called “protesters” at the White House had little to do with the memory of George Floyd. They were just there to cause trouble. The @SecretService handled them easily. Tonight, I understand, is MAGA NIGHT AT THE WHITE HOUSE???

Watch NASA astronauts fly SpaceX’s Crew Dragon using touchscreens

Nearly two hours after NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley became the first astronauts launched to space on a privately-owned rocket, they also became the first to pilot a spaceship using only touchscreen controls.

SpaceX’s Crew Dragon eschews the famous maze of manual controls and switches found on retired spacecraft like the Space Shuttle or the Apollo command modules. Instead, Crew Dragon pilots have just three large touchscreen panels in front of them and a few spare buttons below. So during the few times that they have to manually control the spacecraft, they do so using a video game-style interface on those screens.

Behnken and Hurley got to take that interface for a brief test ride Saturday afternoon when SpaceX had them...

This coyote playing golf in a backyard alone knows how to have a good time

Did you know coyotes can't pass up a chance to play golf in a backyard?

Well, maybe some of them can, but not this playful scamp who was seen tossing a golf ball around on someone's personal putting green.

According to the video description, on May 22, a coyote wandered into a Tarzana, California, backyard and brushed up on its golf skills. The owner of the Ring camera said that after about three minutes the coyote left, but perhaps it will return for another midnight game sometime soon.

Next time you're bored or feeling a little lonely, remember this coyote and know that you don't need another person to have fun. If this coyote can throw a golf ball around for like three minutes, you can entertain yourself, too. Read more...

The real star of the SpaceX astronaut launch was a sparkly stuffed dinosaur

The real star of the SpaceX astronaut launch was a sparkly stuffed dinosaur

The only thing cooler than humans going to space is humans going to space with an adorable stuffed animal.

On Saturday afternoon, NASA launched astronauts into space aboard the Crew Dragon, a spacecraft built by Elon Musk's company, SpaceX. The two NASA astronauts who launched into orbit were Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley, but they didn't embark on their historic journey alone. They brought a sparkly stuffed dinosaur to keep them company.

Now, the two astronauts are cool as hell, obviously. But in some ways, this little stuffed pal was the star of the launch. The light bouncing off the dino's sequins really caught the camera, and when the spaceship reached zero gravity he slid out of his seatbelt and gracefully floated up towards the lens. Read more...

Waymo's self-driving minivans will return to California streets in June

Waymo's self-driving minivans will return to California streets in June

Waymo is ready to get back to the business of being on the streets of California.

The Alphabet-owned company shut down a public testing program for its self-driving minivans in early March, as the global pandemic started to reshape society in the United States. Now that fleet will reportedly return to the streets of San Francisco on June 8.

That revelation comes from a company email obtained by The Verge, which reported the news on Saturday. The self-driving fleet will apparently be running deliveries for a pair of non-profits: Wendy McNaughton's #DrawTogether, which sets local kids up with art kits; and Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
