Pokémon Go will end support for older iOS and Android phones in October

Pokemon Go Photo by James Bareham / The Verge

If you still play Pokémon Go on a smartphone or tablet running Android 5.0 “Lollipop” or iOS 10 or 11, you’ll no longer be able to access the game when Niantic pushes an update in mid-October. The Pokémon Go Twitter account confirmed that two popular older phones also won’t make the cut: the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 are being left behind, despite the fact both phones can be upgraded to run iOS 12.

“iPhone 5S and 6 have just 1 GB of RAM, and we don’t want to hold back development and implementation of features for the vast majority of players who have more robust phones,” Niantic tells The Verge.

All things considered, the performance on those devices probably wasn’t great. Pokémon Go might not be as demanding as some other titles, but it...

Google Photos on iOS can now crop, trim, and add filters to your videos

The Google Photos app for iOS is getting an updated video editor that adds several useful new features, including the ability to trim video clips, add filters, crop, and make adjustments like exposure, contrast, and saturation.

The new video editor options work similarly to the existing image editing tools. Simply tap the “edit” button when previewing a video, and you’ll be taken to the new editor, which adds several new tabs, in addition to the existing “export frame” option.

There’s a variety of filters, including an “Auto” filter that intelligently adjusts your video. There are manual adjustment controls, divided into a Light menu (for exposure, contrast, whites, highlights, shadows, blacks, and vignette sliders) and Color (to...

Twitter's 'Quote Tweet' changes make sussing out online drama easier

Twitter's 'Quote Tweet' changes make sussing out online drama easier

Twitter's incredibly handy "Retweets with comments" feature is getting a rebranding, as well as becoming a tiny bit more convenient to use.

Earlier this year, Twitter added the option to see retweets that include a comment without having to use an automated account such as @QuotedReplies. Now the feature has been renamed, ditching the descriptive but clunky "Retweets with comments" for the cleaner "Quote Tweets."

Quote Tweets also appear between the Retweets and Likes on a tweet now, making the feature slightly less annoying to access. Previously, you had to click to see the Retweets, then click "Retweets with comments" from there. Now, you can just jump straight to the drama. Read more...

TikTok's new commerce integration lets creators start milkin' content for cash

TikTok's new commerce integration lets creators start milkin' content for cash

TikTok is making it easier for creators to turn looped video streams into pure American profit.

The embattled social media company announced Monday that it had entered into a new partnership with the customized online merch platform Teespring. The integration will allow creators to include links to their Teespring products directly in their videos.

TikTokkers with hearty followings already frequently link to personal merchandise stores in their bios. Selling merch like clothing, as well as digital tutorials or templates, is a popular way for independent creators to earn cash from the people who consume their content for free. The new Teespring integration builds on what creators are already doing themselves with an official and more streamlined tool. Read more...

OnePlus may have accidentally revealed the upcoming OnePlus 8T

Image: OxygenUpdater

OnePlus may have accidentally revealed a first look at the OnePlus 8T, thanks to an image found in the latest Android 11 developer preview for OnePlus 8-series devices by OxygenUpdater.

The leaked image doesn’t offer much to go on, just a front-facing view of the device, which appears to be pretty similar to the existing OnePlus 8. It’s possible that this image — which is labeled OnePlus_8T.webp and is a distinct file from the images for the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro — is simply a placeholder for a different, final design for the OnePlus 8T.

But given the timing of the leak (OnePlus usually releases its fall T-series refreshes in the October to November range) and the fact that it was found in OnePlus’ own firmware update, it seems...

Zoom saw revenue quadruple in monster second quarter

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Videoconferencing platform Zoom had a huge second quarter, with $663.5 million in revenue compared to $145.8 million a year ago, the company announced on Monday. It now has around 370,000 customers with more than 10 employees, an increase of 458 percent year over year.

“Our ability to keep people around the world connected, coupled with our strong execution, led to revenue growth of 355% year-over-year in Q2,” Zoom founder and CEO Eric S. Yuan said in a statement announcing the earnings.

The company’s revenue outlook for fiscal 2021 is now $2.39 billion, Yuan added. Zoom has become ubiquitous during the coronavirus pandemic, reflected in its blockbuster first quarter when it grew revenue almost 170 percent year over year to $328...

The airline industry is ditching change fees because it’s desperate for people to fly

Delta Airlines (STOCK)

American Airlines and Delta Air Lines both said they would permanently eliminate fees associated with changing or canceling a flight. The news comes less than a day after United Airlines first announced a permanent end to its change fee policy.

All three carriers have been waiving change fees since March 2020, when the novel coronavirus pandemic first disrupted global air travel. With demand dried up, the airlines are seeking to make flying look safe, stress-free, and, most of all, cheap. And that means eliminating many of the fees and surcharges associated with air travel.

“We’ve said before that we need to approach flexibility differently than this industry has in the past, and today’s announcement builds on that promise to ensure...

Microsoft Flight Simulator’s re-creations of macOS wallpapers look just as good

Left: Matt Birchler’s recreation. Right: Apple’s original wallpaper. | Matt Birchler, Apple

Many of us are finding cool things to work on while stuck at home, and I think Matt Birchler takes the cake this week. He, like much of the internet, has been taking off in Microsoft Flight Simulator, and he used the absolutely unreal detail in the game to re-create some of the more iconic wallpapers from recent releases of macOS.

To re-create these images, Matt flew to each location, then used Flight Simulator to position the camera, set the focal length, and adjust the time of day with in-game controls. Then, with a little post-processing magic in Adobe Lightroom, he created the images below.

Flight Simulator is a ‘make your own fun’ game and I was looking for interesting things to do while flying around,” Birchler told The Verge. He...

Amazon gets official approval to fly its delivery drones

Amazon gets official approval to fly its delivery drones

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's an ... Amazon drone?

Amazon has just gotten the thumbs up from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to start using its Prime Air drone fleet for customer deliveries. On Saturday, the FAA granted Amazon Part 135 Certification, which means the company has the go-ahead to use drones to "safely and efficiently deliver packages to customers," according to a statement from the FAA.

That doesn't mean drones are going to start delivering packages immediately, per Amazon. Instead, it indicates that the FAA has reviewed all of Amazon's safety procedures, and the company has passed muster. The certification gives Amazon the ability to begin testing and scaling a system which would use drones to deliver lightweight packages in 30 minutes or less from order.  Read more...

Bang & Olufsen’s $800 noise-canceling headphones copy the best part of Microsoft’s Surface Headphones

Image: Bang & Olufsen

Bang & Olufsen has announced its new Beoplay H95 noise-canceling headphones for the steep price of $800. You can get a stellar pair of headphones for much, much less than that, but the audio specialist is hoping to leapfrog Sony, Bose, and other headphone makers in craftsmanship and sound quality. With their lambskin ear pads (with memory foam inside), aluminum frame, and leather headband, these certainly look the part of top-end, premium headphones.

With the H95 headphones, Bang & Olufsen also copied one of the best things about Microsoft’s Surface Headphones: the dial controls. You can twist the dial on the right ear cup to adjust volume and the one on the left to control the adaptive noise cancellation. That’s exactly how the Surface...

BTS lit up the MTV VMAs with their debut performance of 'Dynamite'

It is the Bangtan Boys’ world, and we are just living in it.

Global superstars BTS delivered their first ever live performance of "Dynamite" at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, debuting the full choreography of their brand new English track. Rocking ‘70s retro-styled suits and a bright, disco vibe, RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook's first ever VMAs performance was a burst of bubbly, goofy brightness.

First trailer for 'The Stand' teases the pandemic apocalypse, Stephen King style

First trailer for 'The Stand' teases the pandemic apocalypse, Stephen King style

CBS All Access just released the first teaser for 10-part miniseries The Stand, based on the post-apocalyptic fantasy novel by Stephen King. In The Stand, groups with opposing ideas of what society should be clash in the wake of a deadly pandemic, leading to significant repercussions for humanity's future. The book was originally released in 1978, but its themes are unsettlingly relevant to 2020.

The Stand's 30-second trailer doesn't give away much, mainly featuring people wandering eerily abandoned streets or experiencing emotional distress. We do get a good look at Whoopi Goldberg as spiritual leader Abagail Freemantle though, as well as Alexander Skarsgård's supernaturally powered Randall Flagg. Read more...

SpaceX launches the first south-bound rocket from Florida in decades

This evening, SpaceX launched another rocket from Florida, but this vehicle took a very different kind of path than most flights from the East Coast. Rather than head eastward after launch as most Florida missions do, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket headed south after liftoff, skirting over Florida’s southeast coast and heading over Cuba.

That’s because this mission was headed to what is known as a polar orbit — a path that runs mostly north-to-south over the Earth’s poles. It’s a type of mission you don’t normally see taking place from Florida. In fact, this will be the first time since 1969 that a rocket taking off from Florida heads southward.

Up until now, most polar launches in the US have taken place from the southern coast of California....

Amazon adds 1,800 electric delivery vans — this time from Mercedes

Amazon adds 1,800 electric delivery vans — this time from Mercedes

It's not 100,000 electric delivery vans from new car company Rivian, but Amazon is adding nearly 2,000 new Mercedes vans to its fleet. Instead of diesel or gas-powered vans, however, every vehicle making Amazon deliveries from the German carmaker will be fully electric.

Amazon recently announced a partnership with Mercedes-Benz to incorporate 1,800 new delivery vans into its delivery service across Europe by the end of 2020. Those vans include 1,200 eSprinter vans and 600 eVito vans.

The electric Sprinter van is the newest commercial electric vehicle from Mercedes and is a bigger version of its eVito van, which has 93-mile range. Rivian's e-vans are supposed to start delivering for Amazon in 2021. Its first two vehicles, an electric pickup truck and SUV with 400-mile range, still haven't arrived yet. Read more...

Hubble captures the remains of a dead star, a gorgeous orange space ribbon

Hubble captures the remains of a dead star, a gorgeous orange space ribbon

Space is pretty.

As the Hubble Space Telescope nears the end of its long-running mission, photo releases like this one are a constant reminder of how much we benefit from having an up-close view of deep space. The beautiful orange ribbon you see above is the remnant of a dead star that exploded in a supernova some 10,000 to 20,000 years ago.

From our perspective here on Earth, the exploded star once resided in the northern constellation of Cygnus, aka The Swan. The photo captures just a piece of the ribbon-like blast wave, situated around 2,400 light-years away.

NASA's post notes that the full wave "covers an area 36 times larger than the full moon." For context, Earth is about four times larger than the moon. So it's a pretty big blast wave! Read more...

New trailers: The Comey Rule, Never Gonna Snow Again, The Doorman, and more

Jeff Daniels as James Comey | Showtime

After the sad news of Chadwick Boseman’s death, I planned a marathon of his movies this weekend. We’re still definitely planning to re-watch 42 and Get on Up, but so far we can’t stop watching Black Panther.

Boseman is just so magnetic as T’Challa and everything about the movie is as stunning on the sixth or seventh watch as it was the first time— the acting, the cinematography, the music, the costumes, and of course the script— all amazing. If you have not seen it (honestly, why?) you should absolutely remedy that as soon as possible.

Twitter flags GOP rep's tweet for altering comments from activist with ALS

Twitter flags GOP rep's tweet for altering comments from activist with ALS

U.S. House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, the third-most powerful Republican in the House of Representatives, posted a video to Twitter on Sunday featuring commentary from politicians and activists. The minute-long collection of clips was meant to show how Scalise believes the Democrats are destroying America.

But the video was manipulated to make at least one of the people shown sound like he said something he never did. That person is activist Ady Barkan, co-founder of the Be a Hero political action committee, who has ALS and uses a voice assistant to speak.

Scalise's video took a July interview with Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and Barkan from NowThis News. But instead of showing it as is, Scalise's version combined audio clips from different parts of the conversation to make it look like Barkan said, "Do we agree that we can redirect some of the funding for police." The unaltered version doesn't include "for police."  Read more...
