Unblock American Netflix with this high-speed VPN

Unblock American Netflix with this high-speed VPN

TL;DR: A 15-month subscription to ExpressVPN is on sale for £5.64 per month, saving you 49% on list price.

A VPN, in case you didn't already know, is a secure tunnel between your device and the internet. This shields your online traffic from snooping and interference.

These services are great tools for protecting your data and identity, but most people sign up for another reason. Online security should always be a priority, but the majority of subscribers use VPNs for unlimited streaming.

You are assigned a new IP address when you connect to a VPN server, meaning you can unblock content from another location. With a VPN subscription, you can watch all the content on American Netflix from anywhere in the world.  Read more...

OnePlus inadvertently disables ‘X-Ray’ filter with an update sent to its global phones

Images: Ben Geskin / Twitter

OnePlus accidentally pushed an over-the-air update that disables a filter that can see through some thin black plastics and, in certain cases, clothes.

Though OnePlus said on May 19 that it would temporarily disable the filter in the Chinese version of its operating system in an update, the company hadn’t planned on removing the filter from its global software. Instead, OnePlus said it would update the filter. The recent update removed the filter for people outside of China anyway.

The filter, called “Photochrom,” creates an X-Ray-like effect by using the infrared sensors built into the OnePlus 8 Pro to capture light that’s not visible to the human eye. The feature was intended to be used to create interesting-looking photos. But it...

'Struggling' Zuckerberg decides doing nothing is best when it comes to Trump

'Struggling' Zuckerberg decides doing nothing is best when it comes to Trump

Mark Zuckerberg has officially weighed in and —surprise! — after much deliberation has decided that doing nothing is the right and just thing.

On Friday afternoon, the Facebook CEO posted a lengthy note explaining his company's labored response to Donald Trump's threats against Minneapolis protesters responding to the police killing of George Floyd. Despite Trump's post on Facebook, which clearly reads as threatening to have the protestors shot, Zuckerberg wrote that the proper thing to do was leave the post up.

Thankfully, Zuckerberg had the courage to do, well, nothing.

"I know many people are upset that we've left the President's posts up, but our position is that we should enable as much expression as possible unless it will cause imminent risk of specific harms or dangers spelled out in clear policies," wrote Zuckerberg.  Read more...

How to demand justice for George Floyd and support Minneapolis protesters

How to demand justice for George Floyd and support Minneapolis protesters

You can seek justice for George Floyd wherever you are.

On May 25, Floyd died after a Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee against Floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, according to the criminal complaint against the officer, who has been arrested and charged with murder. The officer, Derek Chauvin, ignored Floyd's insistence that he couldn't breathe.

In the days that followed Floyd's death, protests broke out in Minneapolis, despite the pandemic. For many, Floyd's death made plain just how unyielding police violence is against black Americans, even as the world grapples with the deadly coronavirus.  Read more...

Facebook won’t take any action on Trump’s post about shootings in Minnesota

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg And News Corp CEO Robert Thomson Debut Facebook News

Facebook will not remove or take any other action on a President Trump post that Twitter removed for “glorifying violence,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Friday. “I know many people are upset that we’ve left the President’s posts up, but our position is that we should enable as much expression as possible unless it will cause imminent risk of specific harms or dangers spelled out in clear policies,” Zuckerberg said.

Facebook “looked very closely at the post that discussed the protests in Minnesota,” Zuckerberg said, “to evaluate whether it violated our policies.” Ultimately, the company “decided to leave it up because the National Guard references meant we read it as a warning about state action, and we think people need to know if the...

How a remix of 'This is America' became a TikTok anthem for protesting police brutality

How a remix of 'This is America' became a TikTok anthem for protesting police brutality

A remix of Childish Gambino's "This is America" is now a viral anthem on TikTok used to protest police brutality against black people.

The 2018 hit referenced the fact that black Americans were disproportionately targeted by law enforcement. The music video depicts the rapper dancing with school children while police officers chase down fleeing crowds of black protesters.

Carneyval, a music producer, posted a mashup of the song with Post Malone's "Congratulations" in late April. The haunting chords in "Congratulations" juxtaposed with the sharp hook in "This is America" make for an ominous remix, which is now included in more than 143,000 TikTok videos at the time of writing.   Read more...

Twitter's web app now supports saved drafts and scheduled tweets

Twitter's web app now supports saved drafts and scheduled tweets

Twitter this week announced a new feature that lets folks save tweets as a draft and schedule posts for a later time or date. What began as an experiment last fall is now rolling out to all main web app users.

Tweetdeck and other third-party platforms have long offered the ability to write now and post later. Twitter only jumped on the bandwagon in November, when a small subset of users gained access to the feature. Six months later, all Twitter users have access to the feature.

It's easy enough to do: When composing a tweet, look for the calendar icon (next to the emoji symbol) and click to specify when you want your tweet to launch; choose a date, time, and timezone, then tap Confirm and Schedule. Read more...
