Android might finally get a better AirDrop alternative

TwitterFacebook

Google might finally deliver a viable version of AirDrop for Android phones.

The company is testing a new Android feature called "Fast Share" that would allow phone owners to wirelessly transmit photos, text, and other files to nearby devices using Bluetooth. The currently unreleased feature was uncovered by two separate publications, 9to5Google and XDA Developers.

According to screenshots posted by the publications, Fast Share allows you to share photos, text, and URLs with devices that are nearby even if you don't have an internet connection. Interestingly, the list of devices in the screenshots includes an iPhone as well as a Chromebook and Pixel 3 phone, suggesting the intention is for Fast Share to enable cross-platform sharing. This sneaky kitten is a terrible and adorable little stalker

TwitterFacebook

Cats are natural predators. They can't help but hunt and stalk. This one just happens to be exceedingly bad at it.

The 8-week-old kitten in question belongs to Twitter user @_TakivaBreanna. Her baby cat has developed a habit of hiding just behind a wall whenever she knows her human is approaching and then leaping out at just the right moment to surprise her much larger prey.

That's the apparent intent, anyway. The execution... could be better. See for yourself.

My 8 week old kitten started doing this thing to where she will know i’m about to come in the room and she will hide by the bathroom door and jump out to scare me when i’m walking up. 🤣 just thought I’d share this cuteness 🥰 pic.twitter.com/SOz1ckGGpr

Iran seized nearly a thousand computers used to illegally mine Bitcoin

After detecting an unusual spike in energy consumption, Iranian authorities seized nearly a thousand computers being used to mine cryptocurrency, according to the country’s state media.

Authorities discovered two bitcoin farms operating in abandoned factories in Yazd province, which caused a seven percent spike in the country’s power consumption this month. Iran’s central bank banned cryptocurrencies last year, citing concerns over money laundering. According to RadioFreeEurope, officials have said that the practice is making the local power grid “unstable,” and warned that people engaging in the practice could be cut off.

Cryptocurrency is “mined” as high-powered computers solve mathematical problems, a task that requires...

Facebook's Libra hasn't launched, but big banks are already taking notice

TwitterFacebook

Facebook has only just revealed its far-reaching cryptocurrency plans, but Libra is already prompting global financial institutions to take action.

Central banks are reportedly becoming more interested in the idea of creating their own digital currencies following Facebook's Libra reveal, as evidenced by new comments from the head of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS),

As the bank used by central bankers. BIS is, in the words of Quartz, among the "the stodgiest of stodgy institutions." But BIS bank head Agustín Carstens now says central banks have to take digital currency much more seriously as a result of Facebook's move. Read more...

Taylor Swift pens powerful Tumblr post following news Scooter Braun now owns her back catalog

TwitterFacebook

Taylor Swift may be one of the most successful recording artists of all time, but even that doesn't protect her from the terrible whims of the music industry.

The singer posted a note on her Tumblr Sunday afternoon shortly after news broke that Scooter Braun (famous for managing Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, among others) would be purchasing her back catalog.

Big Machine Label Group, Swift’s former label and the owner of her master recordings from her 2006 self-titled debut through 2017’s reputation, was sold to Braun as part of a $300 million deal, Billboard reports.

Noting that she found out the news the same time everyone else did, Swift wrote on Tumblr, “All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years,” calling out when Braun's client, Kanye West, "organized a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked," among other events. Amazon is adding a new tab to highlight live television to its Fire TVs

Amazon is making it easier for users to find live television on its Fire TV units. The company says that it will soon roll out a “Live” tab that collects all of the various live programming across apps that users might have installed.

Amazon describes the tab as a “single destination” that “brings together your live sports, news, and channels from select OTT services, streaming apps (e.g. PlayStation Vue), paid subscriptions, and over-the-air antennas into one consolidated view.”

The tab is located on the TV’s main navigation menus, and the section will group the channels that you’ve recently viewed. It’ll also show off lists of other channels “which share similar programming,” like sports or breaking news. The tab isn’t quite live...

Apple says that it’s focused on quality over quantity when it comes to its TV shows

Apple’s head of services and programming says that the company has adopted a quality-over-quantity mindset when it comes to its forthcoming Apple TV Plus service. This weekend, The Sunday Times released an interview with Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue, in which he talks about what to expect from the service forthcoming service, which is expected to launch later this fall.

The revelation is a rebuke to Netflix programming model: releasing as much original content as it can to attract viewers. In the interview, Cue says that Apple won’t be “creating the most” original content for users, but will be “creating the best.” When asked about Netflix’s model, he notes that there’s “nothing wrong with...

The new and improved Gay Street sign is all over NYC Pride Twitter

TwitterFacebook

This year the New York City Pride March marks 50 years since the Stonewall Riot, and the parade is  bigger and more colorful than ever. As the march makes its way to Greenwich Village, one street sign in particular is popping up on social media as a symbol of 2019's much-needed focus on inclusion in the queer community.

It's pure coincidence that Gay Street intersects with Christopher Street right near the Stonewall Inn — the "Gay" of Gay Street is a family name — but its location on the parade route makes it prime real estate for a statement on what pride means in 2019. Take a look:

Google's texting app could soon be more like Snapchat

TwitterFacebook

Google's iMessage competitor may soon be getting an upgrade.

The company is testing Snapchat-like augmented reality effects in its Android Messages texting app, according to a new report.

The folks at XDA Developers uncovered five unreleased AR effects in the messages app, and they're actually pretty cool. You can see them all in the video below, but they include a fireworks effects, an angel (complete with a halo, of course), confetti, balloons, and a clever airplane animation.

At this point, it's not clear if this is anything more than a test or when these might be more widely available. Google didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on the feature.  Read more...

Video of people playing ping pong on the subway has New York Twitter very annoyed

TwitterFacebook

New Yorkers are famously unflappable, but a viral video of two people playing a full game of ping pong on a 6 train has New York Twitter visibly annoyed at the players.

Author Mary Carr posted a video of the admittedly impressive subway athletes around 7:00 p.m. ET on June 29. Her video subsequently went viral, mostly because people were ticked off at the audacity of anyone who would clog up a whole subway aisle during rush hour.

Ugh. They should stop trying so hard.

Equity transcribed: SoftBank-backed startup cracks under pressure to scale

Welcome back to the transcribed edition of the popular podcast Equity. This week, TechCrunch writers Kate Clark and Connie Loizos were joined in the studio by Canvas Ventures’ general partner Rebecca Lynn.

This week, the crew talked about the big rounds raised by shoe resale marketplace StockX, which raised  $110 million at a $1 billion valuation. And Cameo, which provides personally recorded messages by celebrities and influencers to whomever will pay for them, raised $50 million at a reported $300 million valuation.

The group then discussed Brandless and the amount of money that SoftBank poured into it. Being the recipient of such large sums at an early age adds a lot of pressure to produce.

Kate Clark: …Brandless raised this $240 million round, only one year after launching. So they’re a very young company. And now fast forward another year, SoftBank is pressuring them to be profitable. But right now they’re only two years old. So I mean, what two year old startup is even at that point?

Rebecca Lynn: Well and what other SoftBank company is profitable?

Clark: Yeah.

Connie Loizos: Right.

Lynn: So I think when you look at this, I think for me as an investor, I don’t know the ins and outs of what’s happening here exactly. But for me this just really underscores the importance of having a very aligned set of goals and missions and values and everything else, when you sign up to work with an investor, right? I mean the company and the investor have to be sort of in lockstep. And when you have an investor that hasn’t been around for a really long time and you don’t know how they’re going to behave really in a downturn or when the company runs into bumps.

And I think that kind of behavior sort of through the highs and the lows is a really important thing that founders and other investors need to take a very close look at.

And finally they talked about WeWork’s latest acquisition, Waltz, a smartphone app and reader that allows users to enter different properties with a single credential.
