Verizon has an exclusive Pixel 4A 5G that’s $100 more expensive

Pixel 4A 5G UW (Verizon exclusive model in “Clearly White”) Image: Verizon

Verizon is getting an exclusive model of the Pixel 4A 5G: it comes in white, it supports Verizon-specific 5G bands, and it’s $100 more expensive. Verizon has dubbed this model the “Google Pixel 4A 5G UW” to highlight its support for the carrier’s “ultra wideband” 5G network.

If you’re on any other carrier, you’re not missing out. And if you’re on Verizon, this is probably a worse option than buying a standard Pixel 4A 5G at the regular price of $499, rather than spending $599.99 on Verizon’s model.

The issue here is Verizon’s limited 5G network. Unlike AT&T and T-Mobile, Verizon’s 5G network so far relies only on millimeter wave (mmWave) connections. Those connections are the fastest you can get...

Chromecast Ultra is dead, long live Chromecast Ultra (and this new Ethernet dongle)

Google’s new $50 “Chromecast with Google TV” has supplanted the Chromecast Ultra in practically every way — so you probably won’t be surprised to hear Google is getting rid of its original 4K streaming device. The Chromecast Ultra is now out of stock at every major US retailer, including the Google Store, where its product page redirects to the new Chromecast.

It’s not formally “discontinued,” mind you: Google says it will still be available at “select retailers,” even though we’re seeing no stock at Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, The Home Depot, Staples, etc., and even though B&H Photo actually lists it as “discontinued” right now.

But there is still one way to buy one — because when Google announced its 2020 Chromecast, the new...

Google’s Recorder app is getting an audio editing feature

Google Recorder Google

At today’s Google event, the company announced that its Recorder app, which is available for Pixel 2 or newer phones, is getting a nice update that should make it a lot easier to search through audio files. The update will allow you to select a snippet of audio from a recorded clip, which you can then either share or remove from the larger audio file.

Additionally, you can search for specific words in a recorded transcript and delete them. So if you’re someone like me who tends to say “uh,” “um,” or any other crutch word during interviews, you can theoretically find and remove them with this new update.

According to Google, you’ll be able to use this feature offline, in the same way its live English transcription function works without...

After lengthy delays, ULA’s most powerful rocket poised to launch classified spy satellite

After many weeks of delays due to faulty equipment and bad weather, the United Launch Alliance is set to launch its most powerful rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida, lofting a classified spy satellite for the National Reconnaissance Office. The mission is finally ready to fly a full month after the rocket’s first launch attempt, which was aborted just three seconds before liftoff.

The rocket going up on ULA’s mission is the Delta IV Heavy, a giant vehicle that consists of three rocket cores strapped together to provide extra thrust. It’s one of the most powerful rockets in the world, though it falls short of the power packed into SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy. ULA doesn’t fly the Delta IV Heavy very often, as it’s an expensive vehicle to make,...

YouTube TV is losing Fox regional sports networks

Illustration by William Joel / The Verge

A number of Fox regional sports networks (RSNs) will no longer be available for YouTube TV subscribers beginning October 1st, the company announced.

The move comes after YouTube and Fox first spoke publicly about Fox channels leaving YouTube TV in February, but the two companies came to an agreement to carry the rest of the MLB, NBA, and NHL seasons through 2020. As the NBA and NHL’s seasons come to an end, and with the MLB set to finish around the end of October, Fox and YouTube’s agreement is also being severed.

“To bring you 85+ channels, we periodically renegotiate contracts with content owners,” the official YouTube TV Twitter account tweeted. “Starting October 1, 2020, FOX RSNs will no longer be available on YouTube TV. Members...

Seattle becomes 2nd U.S. city to guarantee Lyft and Uber drivers a minimum wage

Seattle becomes 2nd U.S. city to guarantee Lyft and Uber drivers a minimum wage

Seattle joined NYC as the second city in the Unites States to guarantee Lyft and Uber drivers a minimum wage.

The Seattle City Council unanimously passed a city ordinance Tuesday to pay drivers on ride-hailing platforms such as Lyft and Uber a minimum hourly wage of $16.39 after expenses. ($28.19 is the upfront rate.) In 2018, New York City became the first U.S. city to guarantee ride-hail drivers a minimum wage, which is $17.22 after expenses.

The Seattle minimum wage is supposed to fairly compensate drivers for both time and miles spent working, even if there isn't always a passenger in the car. It also accounts for breaks, refueling time, time cleaning between rides, and other work stoppages that currently go unpaid.  Read more...

Improved Google Photos editor is rolling out now on Android

Google is starting to roll out a new editing mode for Google Photos on Android, which adds machine learning-powered automatic suggestions, and improved tools for more granular manual controls to help make your photos look even better.

The biggest change is a new “Suggestions” tab in the photo editing menu, which will offer recommendations for edits for the specific photo you’re currently looking at, automatically adjusting things like “brightness, contrast, and portrait effects.” The broad edits are also just a starting point — Google will also show you what edits it made, and let you tweak them further.

To start, Google is offering some basic options for suggestions, like “Enhance” and “Color Pop,” but the company...

Netflix's emotional 'Social Distance' trailer almost romanticizes quarantine

Netflix's emotional 'Social Distance' trailer almost romanticizes quarantine

TV is really in the business of archiving the present these days. Often, it feels like events are nowhere near over before we get to watch them fictionalized for TV.

Netflix's Social Distance presents eight standalone episodes about different people coping with quarantine measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The press release sent out with the trailer is full of phrases like "emotional experience" and "connection" and "deeply human," describing the series' anchor as "the power of the human spirit in the face of uncertainty and isolation."

That is all very nice and wrapped up with emotionally stirring music for a trailer that features Danielle Brooks, Mike Colter, Oscar Nuñez, Asante Blackk, and more. There's a story about a recovering alcoholic trying to stay on the wagon, a couple dealing with intimacy issues, and a family living through the all-too-familiar daily struggle of video chats.  Read more...

Google’s new Chromecast puts all your streaming apps into one slick interface

Google's Chromecast product line has stood out for years among streaming hardware because, unlike Roku or Apple TV, it's never had remotes or real user interfaces. That changes now.

Google announced the 4K and HDR-compatible Chromecast with Google TV during its "Launch Night In" event on Wednesday. If you've ever used a Chromecast before, the new additions will be abundantly clear: Google finally, finally included a Google Assistant-enabled voice remote, so you no longer have to control your streaming content with a phone. In addition to that, Google concocted a new UI called Google TV, which is making its debut with this new $50 Chromecast, available today. Read more...

Google announces its new $99 smart speaker, Nest Audio

Google announces its new $99 smart speaker, Nest Audio

It only took four years, but Google has finally released a successor to the Google Home smart speaker. At its hardware event on Wednesday, the company announced the all-new Nest Audio for $99.

The smart speaker comes equipped with a 19mm tweeter and 75mm mid-woofer, which is supposed to give you a fuller and more natural sound. In comparison to the original Google Home, Google claims it delivers 50 percent more bass and 75 percent more volume.

Google's Media EQ feature, first introduced in the Google Home Max, is also included in the new Nest Audio. Essentially, it measures the acoustics of the space where the smart speaker is placed and adjusts the audio accordingly. That's in addition to Ambient IQ, which adjusts the volume of the content you're listening to (as well as Google Assistant), depending on the background noise in the room. Read more...

Cut his mic, don't kill the debates: What Trump's terrible night taught us

There is, so far as we know, only one moment in Donald Trump's long and privileged life in which he was actually made to shut up: the mashed potato incident.

When Trump was 7, his elder brother Fred dumped a warm bowl of mash on Donald's head at the dinner table "because he was being such a brat" towards their younger siblings and wouldn't listen to his mother, according to Mary Trump's family tell-all Too Much and Never Enough. "Everybody laughed, and they couldn't stop laughing," she wrote. "It was the first time Donald had been humiliated ... from then on, he would never allow himself to feel that feeling again." The incident still stings: Trump glowered at the family when they brought it up during a White House lunch in 2017, Mary wrote.      Read more...

Here’s what the new Chromecast’s Google TV software looks like

Spotify’s exclusive Michelle Obama podcast will be available on other platforms starting tomorrow

Spotify

Spotify made major headlines last year when it announced an exclusive podcast deal with the Obamas’ production studio Higher Ground. Today, the company made a perplexing about-face. The company says it’ll be releasing the first season of The Michelle Obama Podcast on “a number” of other podcast listening platforms starting tomorrow, September 30th — two weeks after the show’s season 1 finale.

The company hasn’t detailed which platforms will have the show, but it’s in conversations with several, including Stitcher, Google, Apple, and iHeart. A Spotify spokesperson says future seasons, if the show’s renewed, will “debut exclusively” on Spotify, but didn’t say whether the show will be windowed or fully exclusive to the service.

Dell announces new XPS 13 and XPS 13 2-in-1 with Tiger Lake processors

The Dell XPS 13 sits on a desk with a marble background. The new Dell XPS 13, the best laptop of 2020 so far, is getting a refresh. | Dell

Dell has announced new refreshes to its XPS 13 and XPS 13 2-in-1. Both are powered by Intel’s 11th Gen Tiger Lake processors and will be available in the US and Canada on October 1st (and more countries in the coming weeks). The XPS 13 starts at $999; the 2-in-1 starts at $1,249. The new XPS was first teased onstage at Intel’s Tiger Lake launch earlier this month.

The upgrades mostly look like spec bumps. In addition to the new processors, both models have received a memory update: they’re now running LPDDR4x at 4,267MHz, rather than 3,733MHz. Like many other Tiger Lake flagships, they’ll also support Thunderbolt 4 and Intel’s Xe integrated graphics.

The 2-in-1 has also gotten a similar redesign to one that the early-2020 XPS received....

Here’s why PC builders are demanding to know how many capacitors are in the RTX 3080

Photo by Tom Warren / The Verge

Following multiple reports of third-party Nvidia RTX 3080 cards crashing, PC builders are now trying to figure out how many capacitors are in their new GPU.

That’s right: capacitors. On Friday, concerned buyers stumbled upon one theory for the crashes: a site called Igor’s Lab speculated that Nvidia’s partners were cheaping out on the capacitors used in their third-party RTX 3080s. And over the weekend, that theory spread: numerous outlets cited Igor’s Lab to publish headlines like “NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Stability Woes Traced To Cheap Capacitors” and “Capacitor issues are causing RTX 3080/3090 crashes.”

A day later, it appeared there might actually be some evidence that capacitors could have caused the cards to crash. EVGA weighed in...

DuckDuckGo slams Google’s Android search engine auction as ‘fundamentally flawed’ after losing to Bing

DuckDuckGo, previously the most frequently offered alternative, was not pleased, and the company slammed Google’s auction process as pay-to-play.

“This EU antitrust remedy is only serving to further strengthen Google’s dominance in mobile search by boxing out alternative search engines that consumers want to use and, for those search engines that remain, taking most of their profits from the preference menu,” DuckDuckGo wrote in a blog post published yesterday. “The auction model is...
