“Get chatty in a cafe” to combat loneliness

A CENTRE that supports older people is encouraging cafes in Warrington to sign up to a new scheme that will help combat loneliness.
LifeTime Warrington has already joined the new Chatty Café Scheme and now wants national café chains, independent coffee shops and supermarkets in the town to also get involved.
The centre has dedicated tables marked “This is a chatter and natter table” set up on a Tuesday and Thursday between 10.30am and 12.30pm in their café area, where people can
sit if they want to actively encourage someone to come over and talk to them.
LifeTime officer Andrea Rees said: “When you are feeling lonely, a short interaction with another human can really brighten your day. A Chatter and Natter table creates a space for people to talk; whether it’s for five minutes while you drink a brew, or an hour of good conversation.
“It is not necessarily about building friendships – just good old fashioned human interaction to combat loneliness, which just might have a big impact on someone’s day. We support older people in the community, but the chatter and natter tables are for all ages and great for intergenerational interactions.”
Andrea wants to encourage coffee chains and independent coffee shops in Warrington to lead the way in the area.
She added: “This is the kind of scheme that you would expect places like LifeTime to get involved in – but it is vitally important that those unexpected places like café chains and supermarkets around the borough get on board to help support older people who may be feeling lonely or maybe even a new mum – the scheme suits all ages.”
Lifetime is part of Warrington Housing Association and the centre at The Gateway on Sankey Street, provides activities, advice and social events for people in their fifties, sixties, seventies or eighties and above.
Across Warrington they run more than 60 groups and events to get involved with every week, including a camera club, community choir, exercise classes and much more.
For more information on the Chatty Café Scheme or LifeTime activities go to www.lifetimegateway.org.uk or call 01925 246824.

New plan is a breath of fresh air

A NEW five-year plan to improve air quality across Warrington is officially under way.
The borough council has formally adopted its new Air Quality Action Plan, which aims to reduce nitrogen dioxide levels within the main, busy traffic routes leading into and around the town – and where possible to deliver wider improvements across Warrington.
It follows a four-week public consultation at the end of last year which saw hundreds of residents airing their views over what can be done to improve Warrington’s air quality.
Comments received were generally supportive of the council’s proposed measures.
The 17-point plan includes some firm, immediate actions, such as an increased focus on sustainable transport, encouraging cleaner fuels and electric vehicles, new cycling and walking links, and an intelligent transport system.
Other proposed actions are to explore the potential for feasibility studies, such as looking into the potential of Clean Air Zones.
The action plan will run until 2022, and will be a “live”, working document which will evolve over this time, through regular reviews.
The council’s lead member for environment and public protection, Cllr Judith Guthrie (pictured) , said: “Warrington’s Air Quality Action Plan is a hugely important part of our work to protect Warrington’s environment, enhance the quality of air that we breathe and help improve the health of local people.
“It is an issue which affects everyone, and that’s why we’ve consulted fully on this, listened carefully to people’s views and taken all ideas on-board.
“I’m looking forward to the plan beginning to make a difference to air quality in our borough in the coming years. It will form a vital part of our plans for the future of the borough and the health of our residents”.
Warrington’s Air Quality Action Plan has been developed following a comprehensive investigation by the council in 2016, which saw two areas identified as exceeding national pollution levels and being designated Air Quality Management Areas. The action plan focuses primarily on these two areas; the town centre, and the areas near motorways.
The full Action Plan, along with the responses to the consultation, can be viewed at https://www.warrington.gov.uk/airquality

Peel Hall inquiry creates rollercoaster of emotions for local residents

THE public inquiry into controversial plans to build 1,200 new homes at Peel Hall, Warrington, has created a “rollercoaster of emotions” for local residents.

With the appeal set to resume tomorrow (Wednesday) campaigners who have been fighting the development on the “last natural green space in North Warrington” have described the first five days of the Warrington Borough Council versus Satnam Millennium Ltd hearing, as a ‘rollercoaster’ of emotions.

Developers Satnam are appealing against the refusal by Warrington Borough Council to grant planning consent for the development of 1,200 new homes on land at Peel Hall.

Appeal Inspector Richard Schofield opened the hearing last week as David Manley QC for Warrington Borough Council sparred up to Satnam’s legal counterpart, Christopher Lockhart-Mummery at the Orford Jubilee Hub. More than 100 residents attended the first day session.

“We had a great turnout on the first day, residents had made a real effort to stand with us and some had taken time off work to be there”, said local campaigner Wendy Johnson-Taylor.

“We hope the Inspector understands that there are hundreds of residents out there who would love to attend but cannot due to work commitments. It was good to see those who did attend not being intimidated by proceedings and standing up asking the right questions.

“Legal conversation dominated most of the week, but residents soon worked out that the main crunch issues are now hinging around traffic, access and sustainability. If we have any hope of saving this 69-hectre site from 1,200 homes this is what hangs in the balance,” added Wendy.

During the week there was heavy negotiation focusing on traffic impact assessments with the council claiming that the model used by Satnam was ‘out of date’ and ‘invalid’ but the appellant’s legal team came back saying that it was a ‘robust’ model.

Several witnesses had already stepped forward, but it was on the third day when residents felt cause for concern when a senior council planning officer was called, and it resulted in several residents walking out of the room in disgust.

Campaigner Jim Sullivan explained: “I was disappointed – indeed angry – to hear our council’s lead being forced to agree with a number of statements from Satnam’s QC. Point by point, our council had no effective rebuttal because the land at Peel Hall had been included in its own Preferred Development Option. We need our council to be savvier and much more determined – this is Warrington, its planning decisions shouldn’t be decided 200 miles away by a private company.”

The appeal then took a welcomed swerve in the favour of campaigners last Thursday following a site tour with the Inspector, campaign group members and representatives from the council and Satnam. The ‘grand tour’, as described by residents was organised by campaigner Margaret Steen.

“The Inspector had an opportunity to speak to residents who have the vital local knowledge of the area. They voiced their concerns over the impact of such a major development. Key locations such as proposed access points, junctions and areas of existing congestion where our focus on the day” added Wendy. “We really believe this was a real eye-opener for all concerned.”

The start of the final day was delayed as both parties were seen ‘deep in negotiation’ and it was clear that a major decision was about to be announced.

Inspector Richard Schofield opened the hearing, explaining that Satnam had decided to withdraw its Option B plan from the appeal process.

Wendy added: “We understand that Satnam had introduced a new model system late in the game. The Inspector wanted both parties to ‘narrow disputes’ in this area but trying to find a solution to this was going to be a lengthy process and the Inspector was not prepared to adjourn for several months. The appeal is now proceeding as planned. This now leaves Satnam’s original plan, which was unanimously refused by our council, on the table. In our opinion it is a dreadfully thought out proposal with many grey areas to be resolved and its lacks vital information and data. On hearing this, we all left the room feeling relieved and elated.”

Jim concluded: “We need our council to recognise the unsuitability of this landlocked plot and to remove it from its draft local plan. Otherwise planning approval process has no integrity – no matter how strongly residents and councillors might feel, and no matter how many times planning consent is refused, there will always be a risk of these decisions being overturned at appeal”, said Jim.

The appeal resumes this Wednesday at the Orford Hub 9.30am. The appeal group is urging residents to ‘do their very best’ to attend and particularly on Friday as residents and campaigners are being invited to step forward to present their objections.

The decision on the future of Peel Hall will be made by the Secretary of State.

Jen celebrates making Power List of 100 Women leading the Food & Drink Industry

LOCAL businesswoman Jen Perry is the town’s only woman to have been included in Great Taste’s Power List of 100 Women leading the Food & Drink Industry.

The accolade came at the same time as her business, Room Forty, an award winning mobile Afternoon Tea Emporium and Baking School, celebrated its second birthday.

A celebratory birthday event was held at Warrington’s premier kitchen showroom, JD Kitchens with a morning of baking demonstrations by Jen and the Room Forty team. The event was fittingly held on National Tea Day.

Room Forty gave demonstrations making pikelets and baking bread, scones, madeleines and a Victoria Sponge using the same Neff ‘Hide & Slide’ ovens as they have on Great British Bake Off. Guests were treated to samples and tea and invited to donate a contribution to the Red Cross who had chosen National Tea Day for their ‘Pour a Cup of Kindness’ fundraising day.

Jen said: “I’m flattered and frankly overwhelmed to have made it onto this list. For the accolade to have come on Room Forty’s second birthday is the cherry on top of the cake for me, if you’ll excuse the terrible baking pun!

“Room Forty allows me the honour of playing a part in other people’s special day be it an Anniversary, Birthday, Wedding, workplace reward to thank staff for hard work or whatever. It’s a lovely privilege.

“I’m proud to say that the business is going from strength to strength. We are very busy with our Afternoon Tea’s and vintage china hire and struggling to keep up with demand for our baking classes. We’ve just run our 20th baking class so have now taught over 100 people. Look out for our new baking classes including classes at JD Kitchens which we’ll be announcing very soon and book early!

Catering star takes home silver medal

A TALENTED catering student at Warrington & Vale Royal College has cause for celebration after taking home the silver medal in the ACF Commis Chef of the Year competition.

Mikolaj Mozul, who is studying level 2 culinary skills and professional food and beverage service, narrowly missed out on taking first place, with judges stating how close it was between gold and silver.

The 18 year old went up against students from six other colleges in the competition, organised by the Association Culinaire Francaise.

Mikolaj, a former Cardinal Newman Catholic High School pupil, is no stranger to competitions, having taken home two bronze medal in the knife skills section of the Welsh Nationals earlier this year.

“It feels great to come second in the Commis Chef of the Year competition. I was third in my last competition so it’s great to move up to second – hopefully next year I will get first place,” said Mikolaj.

“I was confident going into the competition because of what I have learned during my time at Warrington & Vale Royal College – the course has given me the skills and preparation I needed.”

Mikolaj will be hoping to continue on his medal-winning journey when he takes part in the UK Young Seafood Chef of the Year in May, alongside fellow Warrington & Vale Royal College student Dan Jones.

Mikolaj was not the only student from the college to come back from Monday’s ACF competition with an award, with level 3 food and beverage service supervision student Danny Bates also taking home a merit in the ‘Restaurant 4 Skills Competition’.

Danny, from Runcorn, said: “I really enjoyed taking part in the competition – it was a different experience and my first competition so I’m happy to have come home with a merit. I’d say that what I’ve learned on the course definitely helped to prepare me for the competition.”

Both Mikolaj and Danny were joined at the competition by catering tutor Paul Ratcliffe.

He said: “The standards produced at the competition, particularly in the Commis Chef of the Year contest, were of an extremely high standard. It was great to see both Mikolaj and Danny putting the skills they have gained at Warrington & Vale Royal College to the test – they did an amazing job and should be very proud of themselves. They represented the department, and the college, in an extremely professional manner.”

Andy Macleod, Curriculum Manager for Hospitality & Catering, added: “This is yet another example of the fantastic work we do at Warrington & Vale Royal College in preparing our students for industry. Mikolaj and Danny now both have prestigious competitions to put on their CVs that will look amazing when it comes to looking for careers in catering and hospitality.

“As a department, we are passionate about developing our students and ensuring they have the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. Our students deserve teachers who will invest time and resources into this and that’s exactly what Paul has done in preparing Mikolaj for the Commis Chef of the Year competition.

“It is always great to see the rewards of such investment – Mikolaj and Danny’s success in the competition has been the talk of the department and is already inspiring our other students to strive for the same success.”

Community poppies to mark anniversary of Armistice

THE annual Civic Remembrance Day Service at St Mary’s Church, Lymm this year will be a special occasion this year to mark the 100th anniversary of the World War One armistice.
Members of the local community – individuals, organisations, homes and schools – are being asked to provide home-made poppies which will be displayed as a cascade of poppies at the church for the service on November 11.
The Rector, the Rev Bev Jameson, who recently accepted an invitation to become chaplain to the Lymm branch of the Royal British Legion, said:
“Making a personal poppy display would be a wonderful tribute from our community in Lymm. Please be involved and make as many poppies as you can so we can make a grand display for the Remembrance Service.
“I am so honoured and pleased to be chaplain to Lymm and district branch of the Royal British Legion.
“My grandfather fought in World War One, my father in World War Two and I always wear their medals on Remembrance Sunday.”
The poppies can be made of any material – knitted, tissue paper, cardboard, paper etc., and of any size but no larger than a diameter of 10cm.
People may make as many poppies as they wish and should be taken to the church in September and placed in the collection box at the back of the church
People are welcome to drop off their poppies earlier if they wish, but no later than September 22.
The church is open Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 10am and 12 noon and on Thursdays at 11.15am and Sundays at 11.30am at the end of morning service.
There will also be a Roll of Thanks displayed in the church for any organisation or any individual who wishes to have their name included as having provided poppies for the display. However, people can choose not to have their name included.
Tony Bone, president of the Royal British Legion Lymm and District Branch said “We think this is a great initiative to involve the local community with the remembrance of those brave and valiant men who lost their lives during the First World War so that we may live in peace.
“We really hope it is well supported and it is a great success.”

Lymm lose free flowing duel in the sun

by Jim Knowles

WITH no concerns for promotion or relegation Lymm were edged out 28-32 in a free flowing duel in the sun against Rossendale.

Rescheduled due to an unplayable pitch earlier in the season, the final game of the season was played in glorious sunshine and on a perfect pitch.

Lymm lying fourth in the Northern Premier League anticipated a close game with their visitors who were just one place below them. Free of any the concerns of promotion and relegation both teams showed every intention of playing an open running game.

Lymm set the pace and an early attack with backs and forwards combining well yielded a penalty for Cormack Nolan. (3-0). Lymm gathered the restart kick and attacked again with Scott Redfern putting Lymm deep into Rossendale territory. Lymm stole a scrum from the bigger Rossendale forwards and scrum half Andy Davies made a break resulting in another Nolan penalty (6-0).

Rossendale’s admirable response was an attacking move started in their own half that brought a try but the conversion attempt from wide out drifted wide (6-5). Rossendale then took the lead with an excellent try initiated from well executed lineout and swift passing to score near the posts (6-12).

A short restart kick by Redfern surprised the Rossendale defence and from a scrum Lymm centre James Kimber powered over and Nolan converted from a difficult angle (13-12). Lymm were now looking the better team and this view was confirmed when Kimber put his fellow centre ,Tom Bray,in for a well deserved try and Nolan’s boot did the rest(20-12).

Then as the happy home spectators were anticipating a comfortable half time lead the Rossendale winger intercepted and ran half the length of the field giving his team a try and conversion.(20-19)

With the second half only a few minutes old Rossendale used their extra forward strength to win a ruck and create the opportunity for another try and conversion.(20-26) A penalty from Nolan reduced the lead (23-26) but Rossendale countered with another penalty (23-29). It had been an entertaining game but it became even more engaging when Nolan ,from fullback, supporting on the wing and running close to the touch line got over in the corner. The kick was just too far out even for him to add the extras (28-29) but still anybody’s game.

The final score was an easy penalty for Rossendale (28-32). They had been more dominant in the second half and deserved this narrow victory.
Lymm Coach, Adam Fletcher said it was the interception try that killed Lymm but congratulated all who had played this season .Ending fourth in this very competitive league was a great achievement.

The club will be looking to build on this next season and use their developing strength in depth. OThe second team won 75 -22 at home v Rossendale 2’s and top their league, with more home grown talent waiting to come through from a very successful Colts teams.
