New Trailers: The Crown, The Midnight Sky, Run, and more

Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher in ‘The Crown’ | Netflix

I have only watched the new episode of The Mandalorian once (so far) but it is so great to have this fun, nerdy show back. I won’t spoil anything but it was A) nice to see The Baby aka Baby Yoda aka my green son, B) nice to see Timothy Olyphant and C) great to see the coolest show on streaming is still very, very cool. Check out the review of the first episode here, and look for weekly Friday recaps of new episodes on The Verge.

This week’s trailers include the new season of the other best show on streaming: The Crown. Look I have eclectic tastes, OK?

The Crown

The sight of Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher was most welcome for this erstwhile X-phile, but also: DIANA! The series will finally catch up to the Charles-Diana marriage...

Mariah Carey formally kicks off the holiday season, those are the rules

Common wisdom tells us that the annual U.S. holiday season begins after Thanksgiving. But real ones understand that it's actually Mariah Carey who's in charge.

With Halloween officially in the rearview as of Sunday, the "All I Want For Christmas Is You" singer took to her social media accounts with a message. The holiday season has begun. So start getting festive, folks.

For those who aren't familiar, this has become a Thing for Carey. She did a similar one in 2019, staging a post-Halloween video in which she gets a call from none other than Santa Claus himself. That's the moment the 2019 holiday season began. Read more...

ABCmouse is an engaging platform for kids that doesn't require parental help

When schools across the nation shut down at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, I felt fortunate that the school my boys attended offered a robust online learning program with live classes daily. This gave my 7-year-old son, who was finishing up first grade, a lesson plan to follow during the day.

My 4-year-old son’s learning time was less structured, which was to be expected for a pre-K student. He was happy to see his teachers during virtual circle time each morning, but since I was also working from home, I didn’t have much time to guide him through the activity list the teachers emailed for additional enrichment. While I wasn’t worried – young children learn best through play – I wanted to feel he was getting some type of organized instruction as well that didn’t require my constant presence.  Read more...

YouTuber conquers cheese fondue fountain in heartwarming sequel

If you don't succeed, try, try again. YouTuber Tasty Hoon recently went viral when his fried chicken and cheese mukbang went hilariously wrong. He's now tried the combination again to greater success, this time making sure his cheese fondue can actually flow through the chocolate fountain he's set up.

Tasty Hoon takes us through the entire process of making cheese fondue in his new video uploaded on Sunday, being sure to include a respectable amount of milk to keep it liquid. Putting it in the fountain still makes him visibly nervous considering what happened last time, but his apprehension instantly turns to giddy joy when he realises it's working.  Read more...

The Lincoln Project is giving liberals something no else one can

The Lincoln Project occupies a strange place on the internet, one that neither liberals or conservatives could imagine existing prior to President Trump's election.

Founded by former Republican strategists who view Trump as an existential threat to American democracy, it has an obsessive focus: Vote him and his Congressional enablers out of office. The super PAC is a nimble, reliably viral force that churns out ads and social media posts against Trump and in support of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. It combines Republicans' trademark ruthless desire to win the messaging war with the eccentric humor, trolling, and blunt force of internet speech. Read more...

University apparel emblazoned with 'CUM' is a chaotic internet mystery

Delighted and embarrassed students and other internet users shared on TikTok and elsewhere that a private Lutheran school, Concordia University of Michigan, appeared to have recently debuted a rather unfortunate and/or glorious new line of athletic wear. The new line prominently featured what people assumed was the university's acronym: CUM.

T-shirts, hats, sweatshirts, all celebrated school spirit, and then some. One of the best items was a sweatshirt with a sparkly heart and the word CUM in the middle. Posts cackling and face-palming at the apparel went viral over the weekend. One TikTok got over 760,000 views.   Read more...
