Plan for 79 houses turned down by council
PLANNING chiefs at Warrington have turned down an application for build 79 houses on a 7.58 acre site at Westbrook.
Members of the borough council’s development management committee decided the proposed development did not provide enough affordable homes.
Chairman Cllr Tony McCarthy said only eight affordable homes would be provided when the number should have been 22.
The scheme involved land bounded by Westbrook Crescent, Cromwell Avenue and Westbrook Way as well as he existing built-up Delta Crescent.
It is currently open land with trees around its outskirts.
Eight objections had also been received from nearby residents on various grounds, including loss of green space, loss of land zoned for employment, impact on wild life and the lack of a playground.
An objection was also received from the Woodland Trust because of the potential disturbance and impact on Callands Wood.
The committee was told a previous proposal for a food store and a terrace of up to six retail units and a residential care home was turned down in 2016.
The site was originally zoned as employment land, but officers believed this was no longer compatible with neighbouring residential developments.
Officers recommended the scheme be approved but the committee voted to refuse the application.

“Creamfields festival caused ‘immense’ disruption”

DISRUPTION to people living near the Creamfields festival site was “immense” this year, according to a local councillor.
There were complaints about noise levels – and an increase in the number of incidents of people trespassing in residents’ back garden trying to gain access to the event.
Now Cllr Sharon Harris, chairman of Appleton Parish Council and a member of Walton Parish Council is urging people to contact their local councillors if they have complaints or issues so they can be discussed at a de-briefing meeting with the event organisers, Cream.
Cllr Harris said: “Much to my surprise, Cream say that the number of noise complaints were down on previous year. This may be because residents go away to escape it, or perhaps, people are just resigned to it now. It is, however, really helpful If complaints are logged with Cream as this informs the de-briefing meetings that happen with local parish councils.”
The meetings are held about six weeks before and six weeks after the festival in an attempt to mitigate the inconvenience to residents.
“If you have any complaints or issues you would like to be discussed at the next de-briefing meeting, please contact your parish councillor or your borough councillor,” Cllr Harris said.
“I have long campaigned against this event which was originally supposed to be a one night event and which is now a four night, camping event. The disruption to the local area and to residents is immense and this year residents have told me that there appears to have been a greater number of festival goers trying to gain access to the event through people’s back gardens. This is not what we want for our residents.
“There have been a number complaints about the noise this year. Noise levels are monitored, however, in my experience the sound nearly always manages to be within the accepted limits even though it certainly doesn’t feel like it should be.
“I have had reports of sound levels exceeding the permitted levels. Every year the impact on different local areas is different. Sound levels are dependent on the direction the stages are facing, which can change from year to year, the wind direction and the cloud cover.
“The opportunity to have any real influence on the event was 10 years ago when the original licensing applications were submitted to Halton Borough Council.
“Initially this was supposed to be a one night event and unfortunately unheeded warnings that this would become a four night, camping event have been realised. The people who are most affected by the event live in Warrington but the borough council has no influence it can bring to bear as the licence was granted by Halton Borough Council.”
A total of 51 festival goers were arrested during the festival – mainly for drug offences but also for assault, theft and other offences.
There were a further 68 festival goers dealt with onsite by voluntary attendance interview and the organisers processed 199 people through their Eviction Centre and 140 were evicted from the event for unacceptable behaviour.
Numerous complaints about noise levels came from people as far away away as Weaverham, Lymm, High Legh, Appleton and Thelwall, many claiming the noise this year had been worse than in previous years.

Charity sells office building for £1.385 million
AN office unit near Warrington has been sold by a charity for £1.385 million.
Carrick Real Estate handled the sale at Cinnabar Court, Daresbury Park on behalf of its charitable trust client.
The investment sale achieved a value of £1.385m, reflecting a net initial yield of 7.23 per cent.
Unit Three Cinnabar Court, which is fully let to Greensill Capital UK for a further eight years, has been sold to a new private investor represented by Commercial Properties.
The unit provides Grade A open-plan office accommodation, totaling 6,072 sq ft over two floors. The asset also includes 30 car parking spaces.
Steve Carrick, partner at Manchester-based Carrick Real Estate, said: “We have worked strategically with our client to bring this asset to market at a time when the North West has a lack of investment stock.
“The tenant’s covenant strength, lease length and quality of the real estate meant the opportunity was well received. We are delighted to have concluded a swift investment transaction.”

Warrington Market celebrates first year in new home
WARRINGTON Market is set to celebrate the first anniversary of moving into its temporary home at Time Square, tomorrow (Saturday).
The 1st birthday celebrations will run from 10.00 am until 4.00pm with a variety of fun activities lined up.
The bumper celebration will include live music, a pop up Artisan Market, arts and craft activities, giveaways – including tickets for Warrington Wolves, and of course no Birthday party would be complete without lots of free cake!
There will also be a launch event for the Market’s Instant Shopper Reward Card.
The celebration comes as figures reveal that footfall in the market has bucked the trend elsewhere and improved since the start of the 6 week holidays. It is a double celebration as work has now started of the construction of the new, permanent market hall with the first steelwork and lift shafts now in place.
Andy Ward, Market Manager, said: “There will be something for everyone at our celebration on Saturday. Come along, and enjoy the fun.

Karate club celebrates medal successes
LYMM karate club Gen’Dai Matial Arts have been celebrating recent medal success at regional and national competitions.
At the 49th North West Open Karate Championships in Leigh Gen’Dai A and B teams battled their way through the earlier rounds of the event. Following a league style competition in the kumite (freestyle fighting) Gen’Dai A, comprising David Lomas, Jack Lomas and Hannah Tarrant, finished third. Gen’Dai B made it through to what proved to be a tense and exciting final against a gritty Kirby team.
After demonstrating some true fighting spirit the Gen’Dai B team (Emma Benson, Ryan Rushton and Ethan Towey) were victorious taking the prestigious North West Open Shield by 2 wins to 1.
Other notable performances saw Jack Lomas receive a silver medal in the boys individual kumite (under 5’) and his older brother David Lomas win a bronze medal in the boys individual kumite (5’ to 5’ 6”).
In the Northern Open Classic International Karate Championship the Gen’Dai club entered a team into the boys under 14 division. On this occasion the Gen’Dai team consisted of Ethan Towey, David Lomas and Jack Lomas. Some impressive performances saw the team again progress all the way to the final. Despite giving it their all, the boys came away with silver medals after losing a closely fought contest to Kanzen Karate club from Dundee. Nevertheless, a great achievement for all involved especially given the very high standard of the competitors.
Dave Shipton, 5th Dan and chief instructor, said “I really enjoy watching my students develop confidence and improve their karate skills. The medals are the icing on the cake and for them to win against such quality opposition makes me so proud of them. The students deserve every bit of this success.”

Wolves thrash Hull FC with record breaking 80-10 victory
WARRINGTON Wolves bounced back from their Wembley defeat by thrashing Hull FC 80-10 with Bryson Goodwin grabbing five of 14 tries.
The Wolves hit Hull with six first-half tries as Goodwin and Toby King scored twice, while Josh Charnley and Jack Hughes also went over.
Warrington notched 80 points thanks to three more from Goodwin, while Joe Philbin, Charnley, Tyrone Roberts, Tom Lineham and Stefan Ratchford also scored.
Hull’s only response came from tries through Fetuli Talanoa and Josh Griffin as they conceded the most points in their history.
Warrington’s biggest-ever Super League score against Hull saw them move up to third in the Super 8s, three points behind second-placed Wigan, who have a game in hand.
It took just three minutes for the Wolves to open the scoring as Charnley finished off a free-flowing move in the right-hand corner.
Hull hit back when Faraimo was first to get his hand to a loose ball, but two tries in as many minutes swung the game back in Warrington’s favour.
First, King jumped for Roberts’ cross-field kick to touch down and then Goodwin went over after Lineham had raced clear.
Goodwin quickly added his second collecting a short pass from Tyrone Roberts and then King then scored his second after two Hull players collided jumping for the same ball.
Hughes then barged his way over from close to make it 34-6 at the interval with the game effectively over as a contest.
Goodwin completed his hat-trick from Daryl Clark’s kick and added his fourth two minutes later.
Liam Harris set up Griffin for Hull’s second try of the night but it was little consolation.
Next over for Warrington was Philbin who took the ball from dummy-half to force his way over from close range and then Charnley dived in for his second while Roberts, who also kicked 24 points with boot, raced 40 metres to score.
Then in the final 10 minutes Lineham collected Kevin Brown’s kick to go over, Ratchford created his own space for a try and Goodwin grabbed his fifth to complete a memorable night for the man-of-the-match.

Warrington Wolves PDRL team crowned World Champions!
Warrington Wolves pioneering Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) team are celebrating after being crowned the first ever club world champions down under in Australia.
The team which includes comedian and Last Leg presenter Adam Hills beat Russell Crowe’s South Sydney Rabbitohs 34-12 at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney earlier today.
Anthony Seward, who makes a 450 mile round trip from his home in Devon to train with the team, opened the scoring followed by two from Will Maudsley to put the Wolves 18-6 ahead at half-time.
Maudsley then completed his hat-trick with Luke Potter and Seward with his second ensuring the win.
Following the victory team captain Jason Elkaleh posted on social media: ” Captain of the WORLD CHAMPIONS! What an amazing journey! Love these blokes let’s get the beers in!
PDRL involves nine players playing on a full-length rugby league pitch, which is reduced in width by five metres on either side.
Two players are able bodied and cannot travel more than 10 metres with the ball and are unable to score points, while two players play under tag rules.
The remaining five players play under full contact and have a range of disabilities including visual impairments, limb deficiencies and brain injuries.
Former Aussie Legend Andrew Johns who had a guest spell with the Wolves showed his support along with former Wire Matt King, with South Sydney Rabbitohs owner, actor Russell Crowe also backing the event.
Wolves skipper Jason even managed to grab a cheeky selfie witht he Gladiator star.

Woman arrested at Appleton for making threats to kill
POLICE have arrested a woman at Appleton for an allegation of making threats to kill another woman.
The woman has been taken into custody pending investigations.
Meanwhile in another incident a woman was arrested in the Great Sankey area last night (Wednesday) for an alleged assault on a family member.
Then at 0243 hours today a woman was arrested in the Orford area for an alleged Domestic Assault and Criminal Damage.
In another incident 0457 hours a man was arrested in the Poulton/Fearnhead area of Warrington for an alleged assault on a family member.
