MP supports campaign to “fix dementia”

WARRINGTON South MP Faisal Rashid is backing the Alzheimer’s Society’s Fix Dementia Care Campaign.
Social care is currently chronically under-funded and under-resourced, and with an ageing population and increase in prevalence of conditions such as dementia, these issues are only set to get worse.
In the UK there are expected to be one million people living with dementia by 2021. The social care system has not kept up with demand, and it is more critical than ever that it is reformed, according the societyh
Hundreds of thousands of people with dementia in the UK rely on social care services every day. Currently 60 per cent of those using homecare have dementia, and 70 per cent of care home places are occupied by those who have the condition
The Alzheimer’s Society’s Fix Dementia Care campaign is calling on the Government to invest in a new system that:
o Upholds the rights of people living with dementia have through health, care and equalities legislation
o Ends catastrophic care costs for families
o Connects the price paid for quality dementia care with what it costs to deliver
o Means that dementia care is joined up
o Ends the inequality of support between dementia and other conditions.
Mr Rashid said: “I share the concerns of the Alzheimer’s Society that the Government is neglecting social care and that people with dementia will rightfully feel betrayed and abandoned as a result.
“The Care Quality Commission has described the social care sector as being at ‘a tipping point’.  Yet in the Autumn Budget the Chancellor failed to even mention the words social care, let alone provide a single extra penny.
“I believe we should place an equal emphasis on the care provided to people living with dementia and the support provided to their families and carers. Improving the quality of social care is a vital part of providing dignity in older age and support for people living with a long-term condition.
“I am calling on the Government to consult with carers and experts on how it can move from the current broken system of care to a sustainable service for older people on the principle of shared risk, so that no-one faces catastrophic care costs as they do now.”

MP dismayed over “slap in the face” over toll bridges

MP Helen Jones has expressed her dismay at the government’s response to her recent request for action to end charges on old toll bridges like the one at Warburton, near Warrington
Transport minister Jesse Norman has told her the government has no plan to repeal the 19th century legislation because the toll bridges are privately owned and operated.
The written question submitted by the Warrington North MP was: “To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, if he will make it his policy to bring forward legislative proposals to repeal charges on toll bridges established under 19th Century Acts of Parliament and if he will make a statement.“
Jesse Norman replied: “These toll bridges are privately owned and operated. The operation and management of these privately owned tolled crossings are a matter for the respective individual companies and Government has no plans to repeal the legislation in respect of these charges.”
Ms Jones said: “I am dismayed at the government’s response, particularly as the Tory Leader of the House, only last week, expressed her sympathy and suggested that ministers would look at the issue.
“Instead of looking at the matter seriously the government have, sadly, just brushed the issue to one side. Only Parliament can repeal these antiquated 19th Century laws but this government flatly refused to do so because the toll bridges are privately owned and operated.
“This is a slap in the face for local people both here in Warrington and in the other areas these bridges are located. In effect the government does not care about the traffic misery and chaos caused.
“I will keep pressing the matter but it would appear I am pushing at a closed door.”

Why the Lib Dems supported Labour’s six per cent council tax rise

THE Liberal Democrat finance spokesman at Warrington has explained why his group supported the ruling Labour group’s budget which will see council tax rising by nearly six per cent.
Cllr Ian Marks said the Lib Dems had “reservations” but believed the Labour budget was the only way to try and protect the borough’s public services.
SDpeaking after the borough council’s annual budget meeting, he said: “In the past, some grant cuts by central government improved efficiency in local councils, but the ongoing cuts now mean we are in danger of falling off a cliff edge with the risk of severe breakdowns in services.
“Brexit will make matters worse and will have a major effect on the town which is very dependent on Europe. More must be done to join up social care and the NHS, which should lead to both improvements for residents, and save money.
“We understand why the council is using inventive income generation schemes to help combat the cuts. But we are worried about the risks they are taking and the fact that too much of our lending and investment is going outside the town.
“We don’t like the offshore trust used to buy Birchwood Park. It may be legal, but it contradicts the Labour party policy to clamp down on tax havens and tax avoidance.”
Cllr Marks said that last year the Lib Dems had criticised the council for charging an extra £3 if green bin requests were not done online.
“This charge falls mainly on vulnerable residents. We hoped the council would change their mind but, they haven’t. Nor have they introduced a direct-debit option that many other councils use.
“The Labour Party has got itself into a mess over provision for the homeless with bitter public rows over the relative merits of James Lee House and ‘Room at the Inn’. Our solution is simple, fund them both.”
Cllr Marks said the Li Dems would find ways of borrowing more money to fill potholes and repair pavements. They were not convinced that windfalls from fining motorists for driving in bus lanes in Warrington will fill the gap.
A recent worry was that there had been a lack of transparency and openness in budgets.
“Major changes like the closure of libraries were hidden from the public until after the budget was passed. This is quite unacceptable, and we are demanding assurances that this year’s budget doesn’t contain hidden cuts that would have a major impact on the lives of residents.”

Custom writing – a convenient solution

Recently we can observe a real growth of custom writing industry. It’s quite new but constantly developing services.

There are a lot of reasons of such popularity. Throughout the years educational system started to lose its flexibility and it requires more and more efforts from the young people. It doesn’t mean that nowadays students are lazy and all what they are doing is searching for a simple way to make their life easier, although it happens to the youth when they need a help to find the way out of complicated situation.

So what are the main reasons for the students to use custom writing services?

Usually the hardworking and smart young people simply can’t find the time for writing their own unique and complicated works. Sometimes they try to combine studying and part-time job, some of them are really active and participate in the social life a lot, and there are also the young people whose main priority is the private life. They do struggle a lot to organize their time and to do all paper work by themselves. But taking into account modern technologies, they have so many limits as the plagiarism, assignment’s requirements and given deadlines. And the most prestigious universities require the most complicated paper works with academic content, which is nearly impossible to produce in time.  This great responsibility produces so much stress and it is the exact reason why the young people prefer to use custom writing services.

What is the variety of model papers.

The custom writers are experienced and specialized, individually oriented and they know all academic standards. They can compose a great variety of paper works including the research papers, executive summaries, different types of essays, book reports, lab reports theses, and dissertations. Actually these specialists can cope with any type of paper work.

The advantage of custom writing is the providing clients with researching, proofreading, editing services, which can satisfy the most demanding academic standards and have no limits in subject or complexity level. The professional academic team used to provide a writing assistance and can manage any task by the definite deadline. Ordering original and unique materials is a sure way out of messy situation without tearing the hair out.

Custom writing services – to use or do not use, that is the question.

Communication is a basic thing in a modern life, it contains different skills and we are trying to improve them the whole our life. Actually a lot of life areas apply the writing skills and it goes without saying that these skills are important for any educated person and the young people should practice it while writing a variety of paper works. Often we have different choices in our life and taking into account both ends of the same thing the main conclusion is do not stop to improve your skills, learn whatever you can, be creative and smart, use your chance to be successful and bring your work to perfection.

Yellows avoid two games in two days as Grantham game called off

WARRINGTON Town’s league game at Grantham Town tonight, Tuesday, has been called off due to a frozen pitch.

It had promised to be an intriguing clash at South Kesteven Sports Stadium, with Grantham occupying one of the play-off places behind the second placed Yellows.

Attention will now turn to Warrington’s next game, at home to Nantwich Town on Saturday.

Meanwhile, on Monday night, a virtually unrecognisable Yellows side was knocked out of the Cheshire Senior Cup by Winsford United.

It will have been a relief just to have got the game played, having been postponed and re-arranged no fewer than six times for a variety of reasons since before Christmas.

Only Dylan Vassallo from the first team squad featured, though reserve goalkeeper Ben Ascroft did start between the posts and was given the captain’s armband.

Goals from Jamie McLellan, Perry Bircumshaw and Mike Koral set up a tie for Winsford away at Altrincham in the next round.

Warrington Town: Ascroft, Campbell, Cunningham, Banks, Shield, Noonan, Mulholland, Vassallo, Daniels, Tyrer, Davis. Subs: Summers, McColl, McGrath, Speare.

Winsford United: Green, Fowles, L Duckworth, Hopper, McLellan, Foster, Purcell, Rothwell, McLaughlin, Koral, Bircumshaw. Subs: Gardener, Taylor, Skaorzynski, Taylor, J Duckworth.

Early treatment – the key to recovering from an eating disorder

EARLY treatment aids recovery from eating disorders – that’s the message from Warrington Borough Council as a special awareness week gets under way.
The council will be asking the question “Why wait?” as the campaign , led by UK charity Beat, progresses until March 4.
Aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of eating disorders and to challenge myths and misunderstandings.
Many eating disorders develop during adolescence, but it’s not unusual for people to develop eating disorders earlier or later in life.
Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, the council’s lead member for public health and wellbeing, said: “Eating disorders aren’t just faddy eating, or diets gone wrong, they’re serious mental health problems.
“Although eating disorders appear to be about food and weight, the reasons they occur are varied and complex.
“Eating disorders are treatable and recovery is possible, so if you’re struggling with problems around eating it’s important to ask for support and treatment as early as possible, as it can make a real difference and greatly increase your chances of recovery.”
Warrington and Halton Eating Disorder Service offers treatment and support for people aged 18 and over, who have moderate to severe eating disorders. Referrals can be made through GPs, or another health professional.
However, the service is happy to speak to anyone about the treatment and  support they can offer. Visit creatinghopetogether.com for more information.
Support and treatment for children and young people (aged 8 to 18) with eating disorders is available through North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
Visit nwbh.nhs.uk/childrens-eating-disorders-warrington for more information.
The Beat adult helpline is open to anyone over 18, also to parents, teachers or any concerned adults.
Details are available from 0808 801 0677 or email help@beateatingdisorders.org.uk.
The Beat youthline is open to anyone under 18 on 0808 801 0711 or email fyp@beateatingdisorders.org.uk
Warrington’s mental health awareness site www.happyoksad.org.uk includes an online directory of local and national organisations that can offer information, support or treatment for a wide range of mental health issues, including eating disorders.

Goodbye, Sensitivity Readers Database

For the past two years I have maintained and overseen the Writing in the Margins Sensitivity Readers database. I have mitigated disputes and advocated for publishers and authors alike to use Sensitivity Readers as a way to attempt to get closer to the complicated truth of what it means to be a marginalized person. It has been exhausting work that has often taken away from my own writing and time with my family, and as of March 1st I will no longer host and maintain the Sensitivity Reader database as part of Writing in the Margins.

In the past few months I have spoken to numerous Sensitivity Readers who have shared stories of being ignored, not paid, or just treated abominably. I have seen authors, when criticized for their depictions within their books, point to Sensitivity Readers as a magical shield against critical analysis. And most recently, while promoting the revised version of The Continent, editors at Harlequin Teen shared the name of their Sensitivity Readers with a reporter in an attempt to prove they had done their due diligence, despite NDAs and a moral obligation to protect those marginalized voices that do the delicate work of engaging with a problematic text.

This was never the point of Sensitivity Readers, and the more I see this process abused by people already undertaking to tell the stories of others, the less I have been able to promote Sensitivity Reading as a boon to marginalized peoples. It is, in my estimation, another way for the voices already dominating the conversation to continue to talk over the oppressed. And I may not be much, but I will no longer use my time and energy to support such exploitation.

I still believe that Sensitivity Reading can be a valuable tool for those authors who have done the due diligence and have worked hard to analyze their own place within systems of oppression. But for those who see diversity as a way to make a quick buck, it is one more tool to keep the voices of centered identities the loudest in publishing. And I cannot abide aiding that crusade in any shape or from.

I will be leaving the Sensitivity Readers Google Doc open for any to edit as they see fit, but I will not maintain it. Neither will I have the spreadsheet as a whole listed on the Writing in the Margins website. For those of you who have found a steady source of income via the sheet, I hope that continues.

And for those writing outside of their own identity, do better. Always, do better.

Best,

Justina Ireland

Major News Organizations Agree To Ignore Everything President Says Going Forward

Reading free writing is like eating McDonald’s

I feel like I’m at a distinct advantage. I pay for almost everything I read.

Yes, I read a lot of tweets, and the occasional free news article. But almost all of the reading I do is of Kindle books that I buy.

I read almost no blogs. The quality of free information on the web keeps declining. The only way to do it sustainably is to attract eyeballs and then sell those eyeballs to Pepsi or Gillette or some other advertiser.

As a writer, I know that if you need to attract eyeballs, your writing suffers. You resort to prodding readers for their ugliest emotions. You might even resort to downright lies.

Getting all of your writing for free is like eating every meal at McDonald’s. You saw what happened to Morgan Spurlock when he ate McDonald’s for 30 days on Super Size Me. He gained weight, his cholesterol skyrocketed, he accumulated fat on his liver. It took fourteen months to undo the damage created in one month.

Back when I did lots of free reading, I suffered similar ailments, but of my brain. I became paranoid and lonely. I had difficulty concentrating. The eyeball economy was frying my brain: Everybody became an enemy, because animosity attracts eyeballs. I couldn’t focus because the more you fragment someone’s attention, the more times per minute you can sell their eyeballs.

When I stopped reading free stuff and started paying for my reading, everything changed. I stopped being hooked on Facebook. I started thinking things through. I started to question my initial reactions to what I read.

As a reader, I now had an honest relationship with my writers. I paid them for their writing, and they wrote things I liked to read. Their writing wasn’t a tactic to hack my behavior. I took care of them, and they took care of me.

Something to think about: Where do you get the words you read? Are your words factory-farmed, or are they free-range? Do you know your writer? I think if you keep asking yourself these questions, you’ll find your way to a healthier version of you, in a healthier society.

Want a happier life? Avoid the news

What are you willing to give up to have a happier life? What are you ready to do to ensure that you live the rest of your life in this world in peace, tranquility and happiness? You already know from the title what this article tells you to give up, so I won’t bother going at length in that. Instead, I’ll focus on the question that you are currently fighting with. “Why would you say I shouldn’t watch the news?”

We often deceive ourselves a lot in life as pertaining many things. But when we are challenged, we are quick to go defensive. Here is a question; ever since you have been watching the news and following the news trends, what good has it added to you? This is not a rhetorical question. Some can have good things they can point out to. But I want to challenge you to take a minute to list out the benefits you enjoy from watching, listening or reading the news (from the media).

If you wrote down something, I’m curious to what you wrote. This is because we watch the news because we are baited to. It adds no value but the society has forced the thought on many that they are missing something if they are not in tune with the news. Although I believe in information and the power of it, information from the news is mostly useless to a lot of people (except for the feeling of being among).

Professional journalism has dangerously evolved over the years. When the journalism media system started many years ago, the purpose was to bring to the general public information from important places that affected the people (or a significant percentage of the general public). But now, the world has outgrown that purpose. We no longer need journalism to tell us what is going on. Information flies at the speed of lightening so behavioural pattern of the public towards journalism has changed but journalism still pretends to ride on its old purpose. In the past, we turn on the TV and heard what happened from newscasters. Nowadays, we hear what happened and then turn on the TV to find out why and how. This simple change has turned the news networks from newscasters to news analysts.

There is one problem with analysis; picking of sides. Whenever things go to analysis, they become opinionated and biased. And that is not a bad thing if the news media comes out clean and honest about their new position, but to retain unspoken influence over people by subtle tweaking of information structure, they pretend like they don’t know what is going on. So, this change has made them educational institutions rather than facts dispensers. They of course still pretend to provide balanced insight, but the insight cannot be balanced anymore because they now seek to educate rather than inform. That’s because we get the information before we turn to them.

Most journalism outlets have evolved into some form of activism. They now have core values and principles they believe in as an entity that should govern people’s lives. So every time they bring up an analysis their underlying ideas for the society is hammered in the background. They are busy trying to win people over by their arguments.

Meanwhile, the clueless listener swallows up the fish, the hook, the fisherman, his boots and the entire boat.

Journalism is dead, there is only education. If you are educated for life (socially) by these people, knowing where their allegiance lie, are you not harming yourself? In case you don’t know what their aim is, their aim is to keep you coming back to listen to them. This means that if you listen to them (for clarity), their purpose is to make you more confused so that you keep coming back for clarity.

If you want a happier life, the things you want to eradicate are confusion, frustration, contention etc. And these are the very things sown into minds in the news. I think about the last presidential election in the USA and I feel sad for a lot of people who lost a good relationship in their lives because of political affiliation. The whole contention was never about the two candidates facing each other or about what they said, rather it was about the role of journalism and public image and what was pushed for on those grounds. I saw a touching documentary of a mother and a daughter who are no longer on speaking terms because they were on opposing sides. Some things made the whole atmosphere toxic. (And by the way, I saw a couple that each one was on the opposing side that got married shortly after the election).

Where did we get the idea that disagreement must be toxic? Now we have people who don’t want to listen, they just want to be right. Where did that come from? Oh yes, those subtle points where what is felt to be right is lauded and other facts are ignored. I’m just saying you should stop being a pawn in the game. If you must listen to the news:

  • Listen to both sides of the story, each on their own turf
  • Pledge allegiance to no side (it’s okay to lean to one side but do not make it an allegiance)
  • Beware of reported speech. Listen to what the person in question said from his own mouth
  • The truth is always complex and complicated. If you can’t bear complex and complicated, save yourself from the headache; ignore

Finally, never let political issues come between you and any relationship you deem important. If you must argue, listen more! You’d be surprised what you don’t know. Stay with the facts. Be honest in your view. Most importantly, ask questions. Don’t be the guy shouting his opinion to suppress others, be the one asking questions. Remember, the truth is never simple. So if you are with someone who is not in the right state of mind to grasp the complexity, just find a way to redirect the conversation.

Choose a happy life. Refuse to let other people’s issues to create a source of unhappiness in your life. Stay away from what does not really concern you. Live, laugh, love! ✌

Links to other submissions [EDITED 28 February]

Not every publicised submission to the Select Committee on Deliberate Online Falsehoods has been published on Medium. This post is a collation of links of published submissions found elsewhere on the web.

Function 8 (F8)

What the Green Paper said about the Singapore Herald and how the mainstream media repeatedly broadcast the government’s unfounded allegations against those arrested in 1987 are just two examples of lies perpetuated by the State. Such lies are difficult to eradicate. If there is a need to contain deliberate falsehoods, those repeatedly uttered by the State should be the ones that require attention for falsehoods repeated often enough will be believed by the people and that is the real danger to the survival of Singapore.
As far as we are concerned, we have more than sufficient laws to take care of online falsehoods. There is no need for parliament to legislate more laws to stifle freedom of speech and expression.

Read F8’s submission here.

Community Action Network (CAN)

The Community Action Network believes fake news is not a major issue in Singapore, and that there are enough safeguards in place to deal with potential problems. Rather than introduce more legislation, the government should grant Singaporeans the right resources and tools to identify fake news.
We would like to point out that Singapore’s mainstream media has been complicit in helping the government to perpetuate dubious allegations, which can count as “fake news”. For example, it parroted the PAP government’s position that there was a “Marxist Conspiracy” in 1987. This allegation has never been proven.

You can find CAN’s submission here.

Singapore Unbound

The meaning of individual facts is always, and already, embedded in narratives. As such, Singaporeans should be exposed to all competing narratives and be trained to discern between them. This training is best conducted in schools through the study of literature and history. To revitalize the study of the humanities prepares all Singaporeans to respond with discernment to “deliberate online falsehoods.”

Singapore Unbound’s submission can be found here.

Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE)

The internet is young, but the dilemmas of free speech have been discussed in courts and legislatures for centuries. Nor is rapid mass communication new: a 1938 radio broadcast about an alien invasion paused to reassure worried listeners it was fictional. The Cold War era was marked by hostile foreign state propaganda: e.g. a Soviet campaign alleged that HIV was a US-engineered weapon. In Singapore, media licensing, advertising regulation, and laws on sedition, harassment, defamation and contempt of court, among others, have long grappled with balancing expression and harm.
While there is reasonable concern about how social media may shape media consumption, we argue for upstream education instead of downstream censorship wherever possible.

You can read AWARE’s full submission here.

Cherian George, Professor of Media Studies at Hong Kong Baptist University

This submission has tried to offer productive ways of thinking about disinformation as it’s used in hate propaganda. In particular, I’ve cautioned against over-depending on techno-legal restrictions — not because we should fetishise free speech, but because such responses underestimate the scale and stealthiness of hate campaigns. We would be better off strengthening the public’s capacity to deal with disinformation. Reliable, public-interest media remain the best antidote to deliberate falsehoods. Behavioural scientists also recommend inoculating people against untruths by making them more savvy about disinformation methods. Quality media and a forewarned public have been cited as key reasons why Russian disinformation was much less effective in last year’s German elections than anticipated.

Cherian’s submission can be found here.

Howard Lee, former editor and PhD students researching Singapore’s media environment

I maintain that public awareness and the open exchange of information remain the best solutions against misinformation. The government has a more important responsibility to be a player in the propagation of this free exchange, rather than seek to be the arbiter of regulatory regimes and laws that, contrary to stated purpose, can adversely affect the circulation of information. I contend that a political determination to respond swiftly and effectively to misinformation works better at helping citizens and maintaining Singapore’s social-political stability — clearly a key concern in the government’s Green Paper — than any enforcement methods. Ultimately,
misinformation cannot be resolved by legislation. It can only be reduced by ensuring that alternative information is made available in an open and unbiased media environment that encourages free and active participation.

Howard sent in two submissions. The first can be found here. The second was also published as an op-ed here.

Dr Edmund Chow, Mohamad Abdillah Zamzuri, Nadine Yap, Osman Sulaiman, Ravi Chandran Philemon and Wendy Koh Lai May jointly submitted

The problem of online falsehoods is a real one, but we are convinced that human discernment is the best way to counter any falsehoods and that the Government should provide all the tools to ensure that the public can better develop this capability.

Their submission can be found here.

GRAPPENHALL and Thelwall Parish Council is to discuss initiatives to enhance the village’s bid for the this year’s Cheshire Best Kept Village competition.
The matter will be on the agenda for the March meeting of the council.
In the meantime, a number of other moves to improve the appearance of the village have been agreed.

MP welcomes boost for brain tumour research – if it is new

A £45 million boost for brain tumour research announced by the government has been welcomed by Warrington North MP Helen Jones.
Speaking as chairman of the House of Commons Petitions Select Committee, Ms Jones said the announcement was “hugely welcome” although long overdue.
She said the announcement that £45 million was to go to brain tumour research was in response to a report from a working group set u p as a result of a Petitions Select Committee report on the issue in 2016.
Ms Jones said: “The announcement by the government that brain tumour research in the UK will receive additional funding is hugely welcome and long overdue. We will, however, want to ensure that this is new money and represents additional investment.
“The announcement is the result of a petition signed by more than 120,000 people and an inquiry by the Petitions Committee. Our investigation found that brain tumour patients are failed at every stage – from diagnosis and treatment to research funding.
“The government seem to have accepted the urgent need for action. This is testament to the tireless campaigning of patients, their families and the brain tumour research community.
“Our work is not done. The committee will want to make sure that brain tumour patients and their families continue to be heard by the government. More funding is very welcome, but there remains a need for improvement in other areas, including better training for doctors, to improve diagnosis rates.”

Protesters give council the bird over development plans

VIDEO: PROTESTERS objecting to controversial developments across the town gave Warrington Borough Council “the bird” during a rally outside the town hall – three of them dressed as canaries!

Around 100 protesters turned up for the third Communities United rally, including three dressed as canaries – signifying fears over traffic pollution. Canaries were used in the mining industry to help detect poisonous gases.

The protesters gathered in the freezing cold to voice their opposition outside a meeting of the Full Council.

Cindy Maguire of Communities United, who organised the protest said:  “The purpose of this rally is to ensure that the elected officials of our town are under no illusion that we do not support their plans. It is our intention to make our voices heard until the council starts to listen.

“We hope to have a protest outside every council meeting so they know we are not going away.

“The council need to understand they have ignored the will of a significant number of people from this town.”

“The councillors are here to support us – not ignore us. If they won’t listen we have other options we will consider, including a judicial review.

“All our consultation has been ignored and we will do everything we can to protect our green spaces and health.”

Check out the full viideo interview with Cindy below.

Cross-party support as council tax to rise by 5.98 per cent

COUNCIL tax in Warrington will rise by 5.98 per cent this year after the proposed increase received cross-party support at a meeting of the full council.

The increase was justified by finance chief Cllr. Russ Bowden to make savings of £15.5 million imposed by central government.

It will result in the average cost of a Band D property being an estimated £1,665.42, including police, fire and rescue and parish council precepts.

Cllr Bowden has been working closely with chief finance officer Lynton Green and the leader and deputy leader of the council for the last six months to formulate the 2018-19 budget.

The council has already made savings of £20.5m and £8.8m in 2016-17 and 2017-18 but has to make additional savings of £38m over the next four years.

Up to 40 jobs could be under threat but Cllr Bowden says the council will work closely with staff and the trade unions to reduce the need for compulsory redundancies.

He pointed out that last year it had been projected 80 jobs could go but in reality this had turned out to be 17, 10 of which were voluntary.

“While the figures for the coming year are 40 I am confident it will be less,” he said.

The 5.98 per cent increase received cross party support with no one voting against it although there was a heated exchange between Council leader Terry O’Neill and Lib Dem opposition leader Bob Barr.

Cllr O’Neill pointed the finger of austerity at Lib Dem councillors for propping up the Tory Government in the past while Cllr Barr hit back saying cuts had started back in 2006 under a Labour government.

But after the dust settled Lib Dem finance spokesperson Cllr Ian Marks commended the council on “creative income generation,” although he expressed concerns over “risk exposure” and the down grading of the council’s credit rating.

Conservative Cllr Kath Buckley described it as a “balalnced budget” and said the council had been  “forward thinking with investment.”

Included in the Council Tax are individual precepts fixed by parish councils as follows (per Band D property): Appleton: £28.75; Birchwood: £101.54; Burtonwood and Westbrook: £23.84; Croft: £75.63; Culcheth and Glazebury: £31.43; Grappenhall and Thelwall: £38.67; Great Sankey: £34.51; Hatton: £15.55; Lymm: £34.14; Penketh: £67.92; Poulton with Fearnhead: £21.70; Rixton with Glazebrook: £31.60; Stockton Heath: £48; Stretton: £23.56; Walton: £10.63; Winwick: £62.82; Woolston: £8.61.

My Computers Are All Broken

Software’s focus on world-dominance has crossed with my incessant tinkering to result in a computing environment that is failing me utterly.

I’ve tried everything, and it still doesn’t work.

My first computer was from basically the worst era Apple has ever produced, starting with MacOs 7.6.1 and finally quitting around MacOs 9, switching to BeOS. While I was using these for fun, I was learning Solaris (and AIX, and HP-UX, and FreeBSD, and Debian) for work. I know some are frustrated that the Mac has lost its spacial finder, but I’m frustrated when I have to touch my mouse, because I spent years in a fine-tuned X-Windows interface that allowed me to do essentially everything from the keyboard. It was only marginally graphical; all of the windows except the browser were different kinds of text interfaces, from the terminal to vim to irc. I controlled everything with a Sun Type V keyboard, which relegated the caps lock and backslash keys to some far away corner like God intended, and gave prominence to control, escape, and delete, which matter quite a bit more. I honestly have no idea what mouse I used for the first ten or fifteen years; I don’t normally care about them, so I don’t normally notice them.

As I gradually switched from a sysadmin-turned-developer to a CEO, my computing needs changed dramatically. I spent all my life in email, calendar, and chat rooms, instead of text windows (notice they’re all still text, though). I did not even have a desktop computer for years, because a laptop was a better compromise.

As the iPad got more powerful, though, and Apple’s iMac computers turned from lickable toys into their most powerful computers, I moved most of my computing from laptops up to desktops or down to tablets. For a little while, all was fine, because I still wasn’t spending much time on the computer — as a CEO, most of my time was spent directly communicating with people, either in meetings or via email and chat. Being present means not being on your stupid devices. That was my computing experience.

Once I left my CEO role, I shrugged. I changed a few things (started writing in Ulysses, for example) but basically kept the tools and practices I had.

It’s become clear now that I have a solid decade of debt that’s built up in how I use my computers.

I really hate it.

Some of it is obviously just bugs. Or something. The keyboard (a KÃœL tenkeyless with some kind of Cherry MX switches) and mouse (some large Logitech thing) just don’t work most of the time. The keyboard has to be unplugged and plugged back in 90% of the time the computer goes to sleep, and the mouse icon just does not seem to care about my needs, even after swapping mice, mousing platforms, hair shirts, and everything else I can think of (turns out that moving the mouse’s wireless adapter from a USB hub to the desktop might have fixed the mouse).

Beyond that, the software is out to get me.

Am I seriously the only person in the world who cares about keyboard focus?

I just deleted an email in Apple’s Mail.app on my desktop (running the latest os and patches, but this problem has persisted for as long as I’ve used the app), and I literally have no idea where the focus went. I hit delete, the email goes away; I hit delete again, and literally nothing happens. An email is highlighted, but, oh, I see, it’s a gray highlight instead of a blue one. I click on it, now it’s blue, and suddenly delete works.

I have essentially the same problem on my iPad (which I work on at least as much as my desktop). My only feature request for the iPad is to make keyboard focus predictable and functional. You can be scrolling through emails with the arrow key, and suddenly it will just stop working. Delete an email, no idea where focus is. I don’t even know how to tell where the focus is.

I’m in this insane world where I can feel utterly defeated by the need to click on an email to delete it, but if I zoom out, just about every other part of my computing experience causes similar frustration. I’m apparently the only person in the world who has quality studio monitors on my desk, based on how much everyone is freaking out over the HomePod price. I have separate audio installations in 7 parts of my house, and the HomePod in my bathroom is the cheapest one, beating the thirty year old (purchased used, recently) NAD and M&K kit in my bedroom by about $100. Nothing can cause you to lose hope that your needs will be met like the entire internet agreeing your needs don’t exist.

I don’t consider myself an audiophile, but I know enough to know that decent speakers start arriving at around $300 (each, not a pair), rather than topping out there. I never bought into Sonos because that required my believing they could deliver a good speaker, amplifier, and software experience for the price of a single decent speaker. Oh, and I had to join their walled garden; I’m willing to consider that, but it’s got to be worth it, and it never was for them.

So now most rooms in my house have audio streamed to them from an unsupported device that is going to become obsolete any day now.

Getting back to computers, it just could not be more clear to me that I’m in the shitty middle ground of the computer world.

I’m not a specialist any more. When I was a sysadmin, I was a specialist and I could build my computing environment to match that. (Although good luck finding specialized sysadmin hardware these days.) When I was a developer, I was a specialist, and my computing showed it.

Now I do what everyone else does: I email, browse, handle my calendar, chat a bit. My writing is a touch specialist, but not really; I’m using a specialist tool that’s great for writing books, but I’m just producing blog posts instead.

Even though I’m not a specialist, I’m still weird. I know that I’m using all of my tools differently than most of you are. I know we all think we’re special, but I’ve been around enough to know I am. Not in a good way, just in a “why are you doing that?” way.

Take my calendar. I’ve now twice written tools to tell me whether I’m meeting my goals in terms of how I spend my time. Sure, you have some sort of tomato timer to remind you to stand up or something. Amateur. My calendar should be a statement of my priorities, of how I will and do spend my time, and I want to hold myself accountable to my goals. I appear to be the only person who wants this, based on the searching I’ve done. Thankfully Google Calendar has APIs available, but why should I have to write this?

I have tried every email client I can find, but they’re all written for someone else. They all seem to offer, “How can I help you do email without email?” I don’t want that. I want the vim of email clients. I want the Photoshop of email clients. Can you imagine telling a graphic designer that you want to help them make graphics without making graphics? It’s stupid. They’re designers. They design graphics. I’m a communicator. I communicate. I read and write. A lot. Make a client that’s better for that. But nope. Instead you have the modern equivalent of a lickable interface that still can’t do inline reply and only has 5 keyboard shortcuts. BZZZTDELETED!

Some of it is just stupid. I have LED strips mounted to the back of my monitor, so I can get ambient lighting while I work. It’s actually an awesome feature, and I totally recommend it, but it’s a bit of a mess of wires with a ridiculous interface (a switch that keeps falling off my desk). I get not everyone has their monitor against a wall, but this seems so great it should ship by default. Can I just get all the LEDs you want in my keyboard moved back there? And, of course, I want it all connected to the computer so I can control it via software. Instead I’m wiring it all together myself and hoping 12V can’t catch my desk on fire. Yay.

I wish it was just that I’m a curmudgeon, that I can’t give up the old ways, but the truth is I like my iPad more than any other computing device I’ve ever owned, and honestly, I always hated the old ways. I’ve been hating software for as long as I’ve used it, and I’m proud I’ve been able to keep my edge as my career and the world it’s in has changed. I hated X-Windows. I really, really hated MacOS. I loved BeOS, but honestly, I held it to a very low standard. I loved every part of Solaris except the parts that actually existed or that I ever used, and I quit using it just when it stopped sucking quite so much (god, remember having to use Veritas to get decent clustering? Even worse, remember Disksuite?).

So it’s not that I miss the old days. I want to live in a different universe. I want a different physics model for our software world.

I know I can’t have it. I know I won’t get there.

But I’m an optimist. I’ll keep fighting.
