I'm not a believer in ghosts, ghouls, supernatural fables and all that crap, but one of the nights I spent camped here on the Alvord Playa recently with my man-boo Miles Morgan (a much better shooter than I) was creepy enough to have me doubting my beliefs for a bit. It was pitch black out in the middle of the night and Miles and I were sitting around camp in the middle of this deserted expanse having deep conversations about cheese burgers, Formula 1, and our favorite boy bands when a strange orb of light from the distance came flying past me within a couple feet and then off again into the beyond... all in a matter of seconds. Shortly after there were roars of rolling thunder (mind you, there wasn't a cloud in 100 miles in any direction) but sounded as if it were coming from below our feet. My beliefs were shattered. Come to find out, the thunder was actually seismic activity that is not uncommon for that area (though I've never heard it before in a decade worth of trips to the Alvord). And though he won't admit it, I think the glowing orb was Miles lighting a fart on fire. Punk rock band to appear at the Parr Hall
PUNK rock band, The Damned are to appear at Warrington’s Parr Hall on Friday August 24.
The Damned formed in 1976, and played their first gig supporting The Sex Pistols at the 100 Club. They were the first of the London punk bands to release a single, ‘New Rose’, on the independent record label Stiff Records.
The popular musicians released a series of singles leading up to 1979’s Machine Gun Etiquette, which featured a strong 1960s garage rock influence. They had established a dark, melodic style that was sometimes fast and loud, and other times relaxed with dominant keyboards.
The Damned received exposure to a new audience when two groups each covered a Damned song: Guns N’ Roses recorded “New Rose” for their “The Spaghetti Incident?” (1993), while The Offspring covered “Smash It Up” for the Batman Forever soundtrack (1995).
In 2006, The Damned released the new single “Little Miss Disaster”, and the live DVD MGE25 documenting the 25th anniversary of Machine Gun Etiquette.

HS2 – the benefits for Warrington and the country
EXPERTS from HS2 Ltd – the company behind the controversial high speed railway set to be built through the Warrington area are in town to meet local people.
They want to convince local people of the benefits the railway will bring.
But local campaigners opposing the project were urging residents to turn up at the “drop in” sessions to make their opposition clear.
The first of three sessions was at Rixton last night, the second at Culcheth Sports Club on Monday and the third at Lowton Social Club on Tuesday.
The HS2 team will be there between 2pm and 8pm.
In July last year, the Government confirmed its preferred route for Phase 2b of the line and this significant milestone has enabled HS2 Ltd to spend the last 10 months progressing its early design and construction proposals.
HS2’s Phase Two Director, Paul Griffiths said:”The benefits that HS2 will deliver are significant and should not be underestimated. The new railway will play a crucial role in rebalancing Britain’s economy, driving business growth, creating jobs and securing investment right across the country.
“Understandably, people have questions and concerns about the construction and operation of the railway, and how it will affect them. These events present an ideal opportunity to talk to us about the project and find out more information.”
A public consultation on HS2 Ltd’s draft environmental statement and proposals to minimise the railway’s potential impacts will be held later this year.
HS2 say the arrival of HS2 services at Warrington Bank Quay will reinforce the town’s status as a transport hub and its reputation as a great place to live, work and do business. With journey times from Warrington to London cut to just over an hour, HS2 represents a significant uplift in connectivity for the three million people who live within 30 minutes’ drive of Warrington.
Construction is not expected to start on Phase 2b until 2023.

Mischief makers invited to Summer Reading Challenge
YOUNGSTERS across Warrington are being encouraged to visit their local LiveWire library throughout the school holidays and take part in the Summer Reading Challenge.
This year’s theme is Mischief Makers inspired by the much-loved iconic children’s title Beano, which celebrates its 80th anniversary. Children, aged five to 12, are invited to join Dennis the Menace, Gnasher and friends on a hunt for buried treasure.
Children taking part in the challenge this year will follow clues to explore their colourful collector’s map of Beanotown; meeting Dennis, Gnasher and friends along the way.
Over the course of the summer, children will be challenged to read six of the books in the collection, receiving rewards along the way, and a special gold sticker and free book on completion of the challenge.
Libraries across Warrington will be holding activities and events throughout the summer to support the challenge, including craft sessions, story times and interactive talks with bestselling authors.
LiveWire launched the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge by holding a series of reading workshops with school children at Culcheth Library on Wednesday June 27, featuring much-loved author and poet Craig Bradley.
Craig is a professional poet, writer and performer who tours the country sharing his passion and infectious enthusiasm for words. Craig has published poetry, fiction, non-fiction and children’s poetry and has written five books.
Chris Everett, Senior Community Librarian, said: “We’re really pleased that author and poet Craig Bradley helped us to launch our Summer Reading Challenge. Craig impressed the children with his unique style and he has certainly encouraged the children to take part in the challenge.
“The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to encourage children to keep reading right through the summer holidays. Anyone aged five to 12 can take part in the challenge, which runs from now until 10 September.
“Reading for pleasure is hugely beneficial for people of all ages – and our libraries will continue to encourage people young and old to make the most of our extensive book collections throughout the summer and all year round.”
The free challenge is a major literacy campaign, which encourages primary school children to keep reading throughout the summer holiday. It’s run by libraries across the country in partnership with the Reading Agency.
Chris Everett added: “This year’s theme provides lots of fun for children to not just improve their reading skills, but they also follow clues to explore Beanotown, meeting old favourites including Dennis and Gnasher who help them find mysterious buried treasure!
“To celebrate this theme, we’re really excited to be holding some fantastic events and activities at libraries across the borough.”
Anyone aged five to 12 can take part in the challenge, which runs from now until September 10. There is also a smaller challenge for under 5s.

Wolves secure league win number 13
WARRINGTON Wolves eased past Salford Red Devils in the final stages to consolidate their position in the Super League top four.
The scores were tied at 14-all before Josh Charnley gave the Wolves the lead on 52 minutes and they didn’t look back.
The two sides exchanged early scores through Sitaleki Akauola and Jack Littlejohn for 6-all and then Tom Lineham scored in the corner to put the hosts in front.
Toby King marked his return to the team by getting on the end of a Tyrone Roberts kick for a third Wolves try and the sinbin of Ryan Lannon on 27 minutes had the Wolves 14-6 up against 12 men in the final stages of the first half.
But despite the numerical disadvantage, Salford found a way back in to the game, Littlejohn crossing for his second to reduce the deficit to 14-10 at the break.
And the visitors levelled things up within six minutes of the restart, keeping the ball alive for Jake Bibby to score.
Charnley re-established a Warrington lead and he then had one disallowed in the corner, ruled in touch.
It took until the 70th minute for the Wolves to get some breathing space, Daryl Clark darting over from close range.
Mike Cooper put the icing on the cake late on, capping a fine individual performance with a try for 30-14.

Planning going to the dogs!
I’ve been reporting on council planning meetings for more than 30 years, long before the internet and video presentations came along – but the advances in technology seem to have done little to improve the planning process and local democracy based on my recent visit to Warrington Development Management Committee – or planning as we used to call it.
There were three key items on the agenda including the controversial plan involving Warrington Borough Council applying to itself for a Waste Transfer Station on Winwick Road.
From day one local councillors and residents told the council this was the wrong place but still the borough council pressed ahead with the application, desperate to make revenue savings.
The council’s presentation in support of the application didn’t get off to the best of starts as a video presentation by Executive Board member Cllr Judith Guthrie, who was absent from the meeting due to a pre-booked holiday, couldn’t be heard by the audience.
We then had the situation of a council officer having to read her statement from a lap top – but only after having to borrow a pair of reading glasses off local Cllr Mike Hannon, who had already spoken out against the plan! It was comical.
Then, with the council chamber garden door open due to the heat, a dog entered the room, briefly bringing proceedings to a halt as it ran excitedly around the table, before making a quick exit back the way it came! Clearly a dog with common sense as I was already thinking of better ways I could have been spending my time on a hot summer’s evening!
Finally we had the elected members arguing back and to with the council officers over the pros and cons of the Waste Transfer Station, as members of the public were clearly getting more and more hot under the collar, especially when they were not allowed to add any further comments.
Just before a decision was made members asked officers whether they would appeal if the application was refused – the answer a resounding no! Obviously the council wouldn’t take costly legal action against itself!
Add to this member and officer microphones constantly switching themselves off, it certainly didn’t help proceedings run smoothly!
Finally after around 80 minutes councillors voted unanimously to throw out the plan. No surprises there then!
So what next for the much needed Waste Transfer Station – back to the drawing board! One wonders what the cost of this application was to the public purse?
But it certainly wasn’t a victory for common sense and while my comments have no reflection on the elected members of the committee and Chair Tony McCarthy, one couldn’t help thinking back to the entrance of our four-legged friend and a journalist’s dream headline – Planning going to the dogs!

Arson attack caused damage costing thousands
DETECTIVES at Warrington are appealing for information from the public following a serious arson attack.
At about 10.30pm on Sunday June 24 unknown offenders deliberately set fire to a house on Cronulla Drive, Great Sankey.
The fire caused extensive damage to the mid terrace property which is expected to cost thousands of pounds to repair.
Detective Constable Darren Burns, of Warrington CID, said: “Thankfully no-one was injured by the fire, however the outcome could have been far worse and we are committed to doing all that we can to bring the people responsible to justice.
“Enquiries are ongoing and I appeal to anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area around the time of the fire, thinks they may know who started it or has any other information that may help our investigation to contact us on 101, quoting incident number 103177.”

Eight arrested during busy night for police
‘T’WAS the night before Walking Day – and Warrington police were kept busy until the wee small hours.
It began shortly after 9pm when a man was arrested at Stockton Heath on an allegation of controlling and coercive behaviour against his partner.
At 10pm a woman was arrested on Winwick Street for being drunk and disorderly.
Shortly before 11pm a woman was arrested in the Orford area for allegedly damaging her ex-partner’s van, assaulting a police officer and public order offences.
Fifteen minutes into the new day, a man was arrested in Gladstone Street for alleged drink and drug driving.
At 1.05am a man was arrested for failing to appear in court at Doncaster for motoring offences -seven years ago!
Around 1.25 am a man was arrested in the town centre for allegedly assaulting police and public order offences. It was alleged he was trying to fight with club door staff and when police arrived punched an officer.
At 2.05 a man was arrested for alleged criminal damage and domestic assault. He was alleged to have arrived at his partner’s address, kicked the door and assaulted her.
The night ended at 4.24am with a man arrested on Wilson Patten Street for alleged drink driving and possession of Class A drugs.
All those arrested spent the night in custody.
