LOCAL fire crews have been sent to Saddleworth Moor to help tackle the huge fire which has threatened homes in the area.
Crews from Penketh Fire Station tackled the blaze in intense heat yesterday – the third day on which firefighters from Cheshire had been sent to help Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.
Firefighters had to use beaters much of the time because of the difficulty of getting water supplies to the affected area.
Hundreds of firefighters from all over the North West have been involved in the ongoing battle.
