THE first signs of Spring have sprung early at Walton Gardens, Warrington, where daffodils have already started to flower due to the mild weather affecting much of the country.
Normally flowering in late February the daffodils are already starting to bloom during December, with the temperature reaching double figures during the day time through much of December.
According to the Royal Horticultural Society daffodils “have long been considered one of the heralds of spring. Planted in the autumn, they spend several months developing roots before the flowers burst forth in spring.”
The animals in the Childrens Zoo, are also enjoying the mild weather, while a hungry heron was spotted perched on a post at the pond, undeterred by plastic replicas put in place to ward off unwanted visitors!
The weather forecast for the rest of the week is mostly dry and cloudy today (New Year’s Eve), although the odd spot of drizzle is possible. Winds freshening later. Maximum temperature 11 °C.
Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday is brighter conditions spreading from the northeast. Becoming colder with overnight frosts and some slow clearing freezing fog patches possible.
